Students to get on IT track from class VI

Soon, students will be on the IT track from middle school level itself. With a view to improve computer aided learning in schools and to
enable students to make use of available resources, the school education department has introduced an information and communication technology component in the curriculum for middle and high school students.

Students of Classes VI to X will undergo two periods of ICT learning in a week. The content and syllabus has already been developed and the headmasters of various schools have been trained.

Teachers who know computer basics too are being trained by resource persons from Microsoft. The district educational officers have tied up with engineering colleges in their respective districts to get headmasters and teachers of government schools trained in the new subject.

"Higher secondary students already have the ICT component in their syllabus. Now middle and high school students too can benefit from the initiative," said a senior official in the department. Nearly 30 lakh students from 1,200 schools in the state stand to benefit from the initiative.

Meanwhile the department has approved the upgradation of 100 government middle schools to high schools and another 100 high schools to higher secondary schools. Admissions will continue to take place till September in order to accommodate students whose parents have undergone job transfers.
