An online MBA is beginning to gain prominence and acceptance among the Indians. All those who either want to further their education or refrain from a career-break are thronging it with a new found vigour. These interactive MBAs are looking to be a great option to them- proving to be a notch above the correspondence courses and many steps ahead of the distance learning mode.

All you will need to get started is:

    * Broadband
    * Headphones
    * Webcam
    * Comfortable swivel chair

Humour aside, interested candidate have to make sure they opts for universities of repute. The present trend is largely seeing candidates opt for online MBA from universities abroad rather than from Indian colleges. Karan Gupta, Career Counsellor, Karan Gupta Consulting, cites various reasons for this, most important being -"lack of good institutes offering them.""If some of the big institutions come forward and offers an online MBA then there should be many takers," he says as a possible panacea.

Professor K R Mukund, Dean, The Oxford College of Business Management, cites yet other reasons, mostly:"the lack of experience in imparting education over the internet and the lack of infrastructure in terms of unprofessional portals." Yet another important reason is that the courses are not publicised or marketed well enough.

"Some genuine people who have the love for learning opt for an online MBA. And some individuals in need for a deeper understanding of the subject are also seen opting for it," says Professor Mukund. Online MBA are opted by those who have the will or need but not the time and those who have the time but less means.

The last statement still doesn't hold true in the event of lesser options in India. Pursuing online MBAs abroad from a good university can cost you anywhere between Rs 15 and Rs 20 lakhs."However Indian students are also given a lot of scholarships," says Karan, who pursued his online MBA from IE Business School. He recommends doing an online MBA only from the top ten ranking universities.

Some criterion

Below are some decisive factors to consider before embarking on the college you choose. It is important the institutions also keep the student connected to the school. Look keenly at the:

    * Programme content;
    * Where the fellow students come from, and the quality; and
    * The effectiveness of distance-learning materials they offer.

What the HR says

Preferences in the HR departments still seem to be low for candidates with an online degree. Prerna Prasad, HR Associate, from a private media firm, says,"We definitely like to pick candidates with a fulltime MBA, but whatever that comes with it are just add-ons." But Karan believes that a university ranking plays an important role, even if it means it is a full time MBA."The role a good university plays cannot be undermined if your online MBA degreeis from a top ranking institute," he says.

Course details

What can you expect in these courses? Karan gives a quick update. He says,"The course material comes to you either in soft copy or in post, live forums, case study discussions, value exams which are conducted over the internet and some top colleges offer'community integration days' where the student pursuing their online MBA all meet across two or three countries." "Sometimes an online MBA like this can offer more," he says as a matter-of-fact.

Cost

    * In India: Rs 30, 000- Rs 50, 000
    * In a mediocre university abroad: Rs 6 Lakhs- Rs 12 Lakhs
    * From a good university abroad: Rs 15 Lakhs- Rs 20, 000

Positives

    * If location and time are your largest constraints then an online MBA is an attractive alternative. You study the course online, give exams through the net and finally bag a qualification."There are several options available and the quality of the programmes has improved considerably over the years, says Charanpreet Singh, Associate Dean of Praxis Business School."
    * Working professionals and students are swearing by the word'flexible' which this course amply provides.
    * Covers all aspects of traditional, classroom-based learning through the creative use of variety of communication methods.
    * It's more or less like an actual classroom."It's even better than an actual class room; I can view all my classmates and even the professor and have free flowing discussions," says Karan.
    * If a student misses a class, they can access the recorded lecture and even discuss it with their batch mates at a common chat-room.

Negatives

    * Online MBAs still need to gain acceptance in India, especially with regard to being a career propeller."With IIM proposing to allow CAT to be taken online, web-based learning should come full circle soon enough," believes Professor Mukunda.
    * Very few Indian colleges offering Online MBAs.
    * Limited reach due to a dismissal system of education in India.
    * Unqualified staff, esp. who can impart education over the web.
