AICTE restores seats in engg colleges

Out Of 22 Institutes In TN Kept Under 'Pending' Category, 6 Are Cleared

Chennai: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has restored the sanctioned students' intake for BE/B Tech and other postgraduate courses in half-adozen self-financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, reversing its earlier decision to keep the approval for the seats in these institutions under the 'Pending' category.

Among the colleges, where the sanctioned students' intake has been restored is the PMR Institute of Technology in Adayalampattu in Chennai, which had come under the adverse scrutiny of the Anna University (Chennai) recently.
Besides, the AICTE has extended the approval granted to two other institutions for conducting technical courses and rectified errors in the seat matrix in other colleges.

Earlier last month, the apex regulatory body for technical education in the country had reviewed the approval status of 348 existing engineering colleges in the State for the academic year 2009-10. After the review exercise, the AICTE had kept its approval "pending" in the case of 22 self-financing engineering colleges in the State for the coming academic year.

"During the review, we had slashed the students' intake for BE/B Tech courses in eight private engineering colleges by 580 seats since most of them did not have the infrastructure or academic facility to conduct the courses. While the lowest reduction in an institution was 10 seats, one college had to forego 150 seats.

Later, managements of some of the 22 colleges whose approvals were kept pending, approached us for a re-examination. After examining their cases individually, we have decided to restore the seats sanctioned to six engineering colleges," an official of the AICTE said.

Cumulatively these six colleges have 2,310 seats in undergraduate engineering degree programmes. In addition the two colleges, whose approvals have been extended, share 1,500 BE / B.Tech seats between them. Consequently, total seats in BE/B.Tech courses in all the engineering colleges with "up to date approvals" in Tamil Nadu has gone up to a whopping 1,27,936.

Four of the six colleges that have been removed from the "pending" category list, also offer postgraduate courses including ME, M.Tech, MBA and MCA. The number of seats in postgraduate courses available in these institutions are 468.

The six institutions whose approvals have been restored by the AICTE are the PSN College of Engineering and Technology in Tirunelveli, the Indira Institute of Engineering and Technology in Tiruvallur, the Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology in Pudukkottai, the Sri Ramanathan Engineering College in Erode, the SKP Engineering College in Tiruvannamalai and the PMR Institute of Technology in Chennai.
