3G network in Erode by September

ERODE: Third generation mobile technology, which promises high-speed data connectivity in mobiles, will be available in Erode by September 2009.

General Manager, BSNL, Erode, V. Sundar, told The Hindu on Friday that the organisation was in the process of erecting towers for the purpose.

"There will be 41 towers within the city limits for the purpose and they will provide 3G services to all BSNL subscribers in the city."

Once the system is in place, 3G subscribers will enjoy data speed up to two MB. Aside from the 41, the State-owned telecom major will erect 116 towers to take the total number of towers in the district to 301. These are second-generation technology transmitters.

Regarding BSNLs tie-up with BlackBerry, Mr. Sundar said BSNL had had a few enquiries and expressed the hope that the sale of the handsets would pick up after the launch of 3G services.
