Babe Ruth once said, "Don't let the fear of striking out hold you back." 2K Sports must have been repeating this mantra during the creation of MLB 2K9 -- a game that tries so hard to prove that the series is progressing, but ignores fixing the issues that have plagued it for years: poor defense, sloppy animations, and catering to the home run mar any greatness this game was hoping to achieve.

This isn't to say you can't have a game of baseball with 2K9. You can still hit and pitch the ball. You can still pick your favorite team and play an entire season (or hop right into the post-season). Your favorite players still look like your favorite players. And if you love the long ball, you'll dig the inflated scores this game helps you achieve (I managed to score 26 home runs in a single game). But it's the defensive portions that are broken, limiting your ability to play as intended.

Make a great infield grab with your shortstop and throw the ball to first and you'll often find that your teammate isn't standing on the bag (and making no extra effort to do so). Throw a bull's-eye to your catcher to tag an opponent out at home, and the runner will easily slide right under him -- and the catcher won't event make the effort to apply a tag. On offense, baserunning miscues run amok as well. Runners will actually run past second base into left field or won't properly stand on the bag -- getting tagged out inadvertently. These scenarios all make for some easy outs when playing against the opposition, but it's infuriating when it happens to you.

The problems persist because the game lacks appropriate transition animations (like stepping on a bag, tagging a runner, etc.). In some instances your teammates even float over the ground, or their legs move far too fast for their leisurely walking speed. The lack of polish takes you out of the game, though it's almost comical in some instances. If it didn't affect your ability to play the game, these minor graphical slips would be a non-issue. But, as I already pointed out, they're problems that need to be addressed.

Otherwise, the players and ballparks animate and look better than last year. And 2K is still the only company trying to change ways to play a game of baseball. This year, they have removed the unnecessary third stroke from the right analog stick to get the ball across the plate while pitching. For the uninitiated, this means that you execute a Street Fighter hadouken-like motion to throw a curveball across the plate, or move the right analog stick Down then Up to throw a fastball. Batting is still tied to the right analog stick, a staple for this series' last few iterations, and it remains relatively unchanged. The game also gives you the option to have "classic" one-button controls, similar to EA's MVP.
