IIM-Tiruchi to begin next year

Tiruchi: The Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchi will start full fledged functioning from the next academic year in a temporary location, until the infrastructure for the premier institution is created on the 200-acre site provided by the state government.
The IIM-Tiruchi was one among the six institutes sanctioned by the Union ministry of human resource development in March 2008, as part of 11th five-year plan.

A permanent site for the IIM was identified on the premises of Bharathidasan University, close to Anna University-Tiruchi on the Pudukottai Road, 18 kilometres from the fort city. Interestingly, the institute is likely to begin shortterm executive course this year itself.

"We have handed over a 200-acre land to the HRD ministry for developing permanent infrastructure for IIM - Tiruchi. Until full fledged infrastructure is created IIM would function from a temporary site,'' K Ponmudy, state higher education minister told The Times of India. With Bharathidasan University and Anna University in the vicinity, the sprawling site allotted for the IIM is considered the most suitable for the institution.

The IIM–Tiruchi would commence admission from the next academic year, by which time faculty recruitment would have been completed, said the minister.

Sources in the state higher education ministry, however, said though the regular management courses would commence from next academic year, short-term executive courses in the institute are likely to begin from this year itself. The IIM-Bangalore has been vested with the responsibility of mentoring IIM-Tiruchi.

An administrative centre of the institute would be established at the Magneto Hydro Dynamics department of PSU giant Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in the suburban Tiruverumbur. A committee comprising representatives from the Union ministry of human resources, IIM- Lucknow and IIMBangalore visited the department to assess the suitability of the building, located close to Bharathidasan Institute of Management.

The team had also visited National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, also at Tiruverumbur on Tiruchi-Thanjavur highway.
"We are ready to extend all kinds of assistance required for IIMTiruchi," said NIT director M Chidambaram.
