'State govt should take over private colleges'

Thanjavur/Chennai: Doctors' Association for Social Equality (DASE) has urged the state government to take over private medical colleges to prevent selling of seats for hefty sums. Expressing shock at the way seats were sold in some private medical colleges, DASE general secretary Dr G R Ravindranath told reporters at Thanjavur that the practice would end only if they were run by the government.

Citing the investigative report by Times of India that exposed the collection of exorbitant capitation fee by two medical colleges in Chennai, Ravindranath appealed to the state government to initiate strict action against the institutions if the charges were proved. He said action should be taken against Union minister of state for information and broadcasting S Jagathrakshakan if he is found guilty.

He said the government should also set up a committee to monitor medical colleges and enquire into such complaints, and that it should also order that all kinds of transaction between students and the institution should be through demand drafts. In a bid to curb the practice of selling seats, directorate of vigilance and anticorruption sleuths should conduct frequent raids during admission season, he said.

J Mohanraj, a retired police official who contested as an independent candidate from South Chennai recently, has urged the Prime Minister to drop Jagathrakshakan from the union ministry. In a representation addressed to the Medical Council of India, UGC and the Income Tax Department, Mohanraj wanted the two institutions to be disaffiliated.
