Importance of skill development

The importance of continued training and skill development has been highlighted by a recent international workplace survey that shows approximately nine out of ten Indian respondents believe their current skills will be outdated within five years.

The survey, by Kelly Services, finds more than a third of the respondents believe the training currently provided by their employers will not meet their future career needs. The Kelly Global Workforce Index obtained the views of nearly 100,000 people in 34 countries including almost 5,000 in India.

"Training, as a function, should be given more importance than it has been given traditionally," Vani Sathvik, VP-HR & Admin, Eka Software Solutions.

Dhiren Shantilal, senior vice president – Asia Pacific, Kelly Services, says, "In an increasingly competitive global economy, investing in vital human capital can become a key competitive advantage for firms. Training may not seem a priority in the present economic climate, but organisations that devote the resources will be more likely to see higher productivity and profitability in future."

The survey also highlights the significance that employees across the generational age groups place on training and skills development to sustain them in a rapidly changing labour market.

A continuous effort

Experts say that continued training and skills development is critical for both the employer and the employees, more so during the current times. Organisations expect their employees to be multi-skilled so that they can be deployed at a short notice in a new process with minimal training inputs.

"The current economic environment has made people well aware of their skills and whether they will be sufficient to see through the recession and beyond, into a period of economic recovery," adds Shantilal.

While organisations expect their employees to be multi-skilled, is the level of training imparted to these employees sufficient to upgrade their skills? According to Vani Sathvik, VPHR & Admin, Eka Software Solutions, "Training, as a function, should be given more importance than it has been given traditionally. Most organisations tend to pay lip-service to training, ignoring the needs of both markets and individuals. Creating relevant training programs requires greater awareness and synchronisation of issues impacting markets, industries, the company, technology as well as individual job functions and employees."

Adding value

Keeping this in mind, most organisations these days are leaving no stone unturned in training their employees to be skilled and equipped on the job at hand. Develop people is one of amongst the 4 core values that is ingrained in the Philips DNA.

"We have deployed a mixture of class room training, coaching, and e-learning based on the requirement and scenarios. Role based training (People Management, Project Management) Domain training (Healthcare) Functional Training (Technical and Business Functional) are blended based on the needs," opines Pradeep Nambiar, senior manager, human resources, Philips Innovation Campus.

Adding to this he says, "The Philips General Core Curriculum, an integrated set of learning and development programs is focused on developing individual skills, and deploying a 'One Philips' approach to learning and development. It has a platform which allows participants from across PDs/Groups and locations to learn from each other. Also, ILP, the annual learning plan of an employee to fulfill his/her individual needs, is planned for 8 to 16 days of training per employee per year."

Whatever the route, it's best that employees who understand the organisation's business and culture, and have delivered results in the past, are assisted in upgrading their skills and competence levels. Needless to say, this reduces cost and productivity losses associated with hiring new talent.
