On education in Russia

CHENNAI: Graduate courses in medicine and engineering are a popular choice among Indian students pursuing higher studies in Russia. This became evident at the two-day Russian Higher Education Fair that got under way in the city on Saturday when a number of students flocked the stalls of universities offering these courses.

Consulate-General of the Russian Federation in South India, Sergei V.Soloviev, inaugurated the exhibition, which is being organised by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and education consultancy, Study Abroad. A high-level Russian delegation representing about 10 higher education institutions interacted with prospective students.

Delegates said that the cost of education in Russia was much less than in countries such as the U.S. and the U.K. Admission is based on the Standard XII marks for bachelor's programme and postgraduate admissions are based on scores received in the bachelor's degree.

Alexey A.Lobuzov, a representative from the Moscow Institute of Radio Engineering, Electronics and Automation, said most courses required some knowledge of the Russian language. "For this preparatory courses in Russian language are available for students. Courses taught in English are also available," he said.
