Photo exhibition on Nilgiris begins

Udhagamandalam: A photo exhibition was inaugurated at Lawley Institute here on Friday by Rajashree Patil, wife of Nilgiris Collector Anandrao V. Patil.

Having, of late, become an integral part of the summer activities in this hill station, the exhibition which features mainly pictures of the Nilgiris is one of the most talked about events among the local people and tourists.

Among the photographs displayed are rare shots of Blue Mountains taken during the days of the Raj from the collection of the Kannerimukku based Nilgiri Documentation Centre.

They include over a century old pictures of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Charing Cross, Saint Stephens Church etc.

Speaking to The Hindu, some of the visitors said that the pictures make one ponder over the toll taken by the compulsions of development on the landscape of this small but beautiful and significant district.

They hoped that they will make the people give more importance to conservation. The exhibition also features many photographs taken by some nature and wildlife enthusiasts.

After going round the exhibition Mr. Patil hoped that the exhibits will bring about a change in the attitude of various sections of the society towards nature and the environment.

The exhibition will go on till May 30.
