Illegal Interview Questions

Although employers may ask you a whole host of questions, but there are a whole bunch of questions that they are not actually eligible to ask you during the interview session.

In fact, federal and state laws proscribe potential employers from asking particular questions that have no relevance to the concerned job they are hiring for. Additionally, the law asserts that the questions must be related with job and need not be used to discover personal information.

Questions Employers Must Not Ask

Discrimination is an ugly factor in every day's life especially in the arena of employment. But it occurs occasionally in this particular segment. Employers must not ask questions regarding someone's race, gender, religion, marital status, age, disabilities, ethnic background, country of origin, sexual preference.

In fact, employees must not have any legal right to ask any questions that are not directly related with the qualification of the job. As a potential employee, you are simply free to answer these questions, but you are not bound to do so.

Handle Illegal Questions

Employers are not allowed to discriminate against job applicants. As an applicant, you have three fundamental options to handle illegal questions. You can answer the questions straight, without creating any waves. But you must be sure of the fact that you are enough comfortable about answering these questions, so that they can not back to haunt you.

The second option may include your refusal to answering the questions. You may simply state that you do not seem these questions be relevant with the prospective job qualifications. But you must understand that this type of answer may create offensive and deeply troubling response.

You have a third option in your hand as well. You can answer the question while retaining your right. Using this option, you need to try to figure out the inherent meaning of the question.

For example, if the employer asks you whether you are a US citizen or not, you may answer that you are legally authorized to work in USA. In this way, you are answering his question but in a indirect manner.
