Japan announces scholarships

CHENNAI: The Consulate-General of Japan has announced the Japanese Government's offer of scholarship to international students in professional training college, college of technology or university.

A press release from Consul Tomonori Minowa, Consulate-General of Japan said scholarships are for three, four and five years respectively beginning from April 2010.

The fields of study offered in the three-year scholarship for professional training college are civil engineering, architecture, electrical engineering, electronics, telecommunications, nutrition, infant education, secretarial studies, hotel management, tourism, photography, fashion and dressmaking.

In the college of technology, four-year scholarships are offered for mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, information communication and networking engineering, materials engineering, architecture and civil engineering, maritime engineering and other fields.

The fields of study offered in the five-year scholarship are to be chosen from the following two majors.

Social sciences and humanities: Law, politics, pedagogy, sociology, literature, history, Japanese language, economics, business administration and others. Natural sciences: Electronics, electrical engineering, information engineering, mechanical engineering, naval architecture, civil engineering and architecture, chemical engineering, textile engineering, maritime engineering, biotechnology, agriculture engineering, animal science, veterinary medicine, forestry, food science, fisheries, medicine and dentistry.

Applicants must have been born between April 2, 1988 and April 1, 1993 and must have completed a twelve-year regular course of school education. They must be willing to undergo one-year intensive course in Japanese language.

Applicants will have to appear for a written examination in July 2009 at the Consulate followed by an interview. The selected candidates' names will be forwarded to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, which would make the final selection. The results would be informed to the candidates by February, 2010.

The prescribed application form along with guidelines can be obtained from the Consulate-General of Japan (Culture and Information), 12/1, Cenotaph Road, Teynampet.
