Running Php Scripts on Local PC ((how to??))

Okay - I hope this is the right section for this question. But I've often wondered... How can I possibly test php scripts on my own computer?

I generally upload the scripts via ftp, install & test directly online... But I know there is some way to be able to run such php scripts directly on my own pc...

Can someone list how and/or link to a source that explains clearly how to do this?

I know as a developer of sorts, I should have known this a long time ago - but I procrastinate... Just now getting around to considering this as an option. Better late than never right?
