Coaching for National Eligibility Test gets under way

TIRUCHI: A free coaching programme for candidates appearing for Junior Research Fellowship/National Eligibility Test to be conducted by the University Grants Commission next month commenced here on Saturday.

The free coaching would be conducted on all Saturdays and Sundays till June 28 when the Junior Research Fellowship /National Eligibility Test has been scheduled.

A total of 45 Post Graduate students of various disciplines in and around Tiruchi have registered for the free coaching which is being organised by the Centre For Youth Development and Studies (CYDS), Bharathidasan University here and funded by the University Grants Commission.

A total of 16 resource persons who had already cleared the Junior Research Fellowship/National Eligibility Test have been engaged for coaching the candidates for the examination.

The candidates enrolled were from disciplines including Economics, Management, Commerce, English, Computer Science and Tamil. Coaching would be imparted to the candidates on Teaching and Research Aptitude besides on the subjects opted by them.

Inaugurating the coaching classes at the University's Khajamalai campus here, M. Ponnavaikko, Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, said the objective of conducting the National Eligibility Test was to select good quality teachers for appointment in colleges. Tamil Nadu had most number of engineering and Arts and Science colleges in the country, he said adding that in many institutions the number of qualified teachers was less.

The university had set up centres in districts coming under its limit to enhance the vocation skills of rural students alongside their academics with a view to enabling them to embark on self – employment venture and thereby improve their economic lot, he said.

He said 54 per cent of the country's population were youth each of whom had innate talent in them. It was essential for youth to identify their inherent potential and make use of it for their own betterment and for the development of the country.

The Coordinator of CYDS and Professor and Head, Department of Economics, Bharathidasan University Dr. S. Iyyampillai and other faculty members participated in the programme.
