10,000 scholarships being given to science students every year

MADURAI: Plus Two students who are awaiting their results have been urged to join courses in basic sciences in arts and science colleges and avail the various scholarships provided by the Department of Science and Technology in higher education.

S. Vincent, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, said here that the Government of India had launched schemes to strengthen the science and technology base in the country by attracting students to study natural/basic science courses like physics, chemistry, life sciences and mathematics. He was addressing the students on 'Careers in science and scholarships for students' at 'The Hindu Education Plus Fair 2009' here on Saturday.

"There are 10,000 scholarships being given to students annually under a scheme called Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE). If a college student meets the eligibility criteria, he or she can apply," he said.

Dr. Vincent said that the scheme, which was introduced last year by the DST, would provide annual scholarship amount of Rs. 80, 000 per candidate which included a summer time attachment of the candidate to an active researcher in research centres. Information about the scheme could be accessed from the website- www.dst-inspire.gov.in

He urged the B.Sc. and M.Sc. students to make use of the scholarship scheme and have a career in the field of basic sciences.

"After Plus Two, there are many encouraging schemes for you. The objective is to promote creativity and innovation. Don't get depressed if you do not get an engineering or a medical seat," he said.

The title sponsor for 'The Hindu Education Plus Fair 2009' was Kalasalingam University, Krishnankoil. Associate sponsors for the fair were: State Bank of India, Regional Business Office-1; BSNL (Madurai), Raksam Study Abroad and Blue Hills.
