KOTTAYAM: Medical college teachers owing allegiance to Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association (KGMCTA) boycotted the annual inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI) at Kottayam Government medical College here in protest against 'the government's apathy in filling the vacant posts and in ensuring infrastructure facilities at the government medical colleges'.

According to leaders of the KGMCTA, this was the third annual inspection at Kottayam Government Medical College after the number of seats was increased from 100 to 150. So far they had cooperated with the government, though they had serious difference with the policy followed by the government, they said.

In spite of their repeated plea, the government had failed to fill the vacancies and provide infrastructure facilities. It was against the total apathy of the government, that they decided to resort to the extreme step of boycotting the inspection procedure, they said.

The KGMCTA leaders said nearly 70 doctors were transferred from the government medical colleges at Thiruvnanthapuram and Kozhikode to Alappuzha, Kottayam and Thrissur government medical colleges to 'fulfil the minimum criteria', during the MCI inspection.
