Teachers' stir enters 100th day

Bijapur: The agitation launched by the teachers of Jagadamba Education Institute here urging the authorities to release their salaries entered the 100th day on Sunday.

Despite several pleas, the officers concerned or the elected representatives have not taken any steps to solve their problem.

In a press release, the agitators stated that the salaries of more than 2,400 teachers of the State, including those working in Jagadamba Education Institute, had been withheld by the authorities concerned stating that the schools in which they work lacked basic amenities and the staff were in those schools were in excess.

However, the government regularised the services of 2,200 teachers across the State and only 200 teachers working in Jagadamba Education Institute were left out without citing any reason. These teachers worked for more than a decade prior to 1999, the release added.

The release said among the teachers staging dharna in front of Deputy Commissioner's office, more than 60 teachers had been hospitalised owing to asthma and other physical ailments.

If the same situation continued, the remaining teachers would also suffer from illness.

Responding to the agitation, Basavaraj Horatti had issued orders to release their salaries and regularise their services during his tenure as Education Minister. But the officers concerned were delaying the release of salaries and issuing orders for regularising their services.

The protesters demanded that they would intensify their agitation if the authorities concerned failed to take immediate steps to solve their problems.
