Bouquets for ABL methodology

The honorary director to SSA has got an award in New Delhi from the Vice-President

"This award is for the hard work put in by over two lakh teachers across the State. They have made all the difference"

CHENNAI: The team behind the implementation of the Activity-Based Learning (ABL) methodology in Tamil Nadu is all smiles. M.P. Vijayakumar, former State Project Director of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) wing of the School Education Department, received the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration from Vice-President Hamid Ansari in New Delhi recently.

His citation commended him for his work as the Commissioner of the Chennai Corporation, when 13 Chennai Corporation schools began implementing the ABL methodology to address gaps in primary education. Drawn from the teaching methodologies like 'Learning Ladders' of Rishi Valley Rural Education Centre, Mr. Vijaya Kumar and his team applied Activity Based Learning (ABL) to schools at primary level, initially as a pilot project.

"The ABL methodology is a ground-breaking effort in making learning fun, quality-oriented and child-centred, and can be replicated easily. It has resulted in a remarkable improvement in the academic performance of these students and also improved the attendance. The method is now used in primary schools all over the State and has also been adopted by other States..." the citation read.

"This award is for the hard work put in by over two lakh teachers across the State. Their enthusiasm and cooperation made all the difference. Also, I had a wonderful team that believed in this project and helped implement it successfully," said Mr.Vijayakumar, currently serving as the honorary director to the SSA.
