Tata Indicom Launches Quickfinder A-GPS Service

Tata Teleservices has announced the launch of Quickfinder A-GPS (Assisted Global Positioning System) service for its Tata Indicom cellular subscribers.

The company claims this to be a first-of-its-kind location-based service powered by Qualcomm's QPoint solution (in collaboration with MapMyIndia's mapping services) and gpsOne technology integrated into Qualcomm chipsets.

Quickfinder enables advanced location-based services, which enable consumers and enterprises to pin-point locations of interest or track vehicles and consignments from origin to destination in real time.

According to Tata Teleservices, here's what Quickfinder A-GPS can do for you:

- Fast location acquisition: The A-GPS module, including hybrid technology capabilities, is able to get First Position Fix in seconds.

- Save battery life: The A-GPS CDMA module has inbuilt GPS and CDMA capabilities, reducing the external hardware and power requirements and, hence, reducing the overall power usage and costs.

- Location acquisition indoors or in non-optimal environmental settings: The same handset with voice and data capability can be used for tracking applications (CDMA phone with a 6055 and above chipset offers A-GPS capability). Using CDMA network support, the solution takes advantage of Advanced Forward Link Trilateration (AFLT) positioning to assist in determining accurate locations while indoors or in sub-optimal environments.

How to avail this service?

Tata Indicom subscribers will be able to avail Quickfinder services on Blackberry 8830 World Edition and MotoRAZR V3 handsets to begin with, with more handsets to follow shortly.

Existing Tata Indicom subscribers of MotoRAZR V3 and Blackberry 8830 World Edition will need to get their existing handset configuration upgraded. This facility is being extended free of cost at Motorola outlets where they 'flash' a handset in order to upgrade it with the Quickfinder software installed.

Quickfinder will be available on Blackberry 8830 World Edition and MotoRAZR V3 handsets to begin with, with more handsets to follow shortly, says Tata Teleservices in a press release.

Initially, Tata Indicom is will be launching Quickfinder service in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Ahmedabad.
