IIT-Madras to honour economist Bhagwati

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M), will confer the degree honoris causa on renowned economist Jagdish P N Bhagwati on
July 31, when he is in the city to take part in the final celebrations of the institute's golden jubilee celebrations.

IIT-M director M S Ananth made the announcement at the 50th Institute Day celebrations on Friday. Bhagwati is an Indian-born American economist known for his advocacy of free trade. He is a professor at Columbia University.

In what is a first for Indian student campuses, IIT-M will provide its students prepaid cards for use at the mess. "The trial run is over and we will be launching the cards next week. For now, the cards will be used at the mess. Later, students might be able to use them elsewhere on campus, like at the Gurunath Patisserie," said outgoing student general secretary Nimit Jain.

IIT-M is currently in the midst of campus placement process. The institute has registered a 300% increase in the number of new recruiters this year. Even so, more than 50 BTech students from various departments are yet to be placed.

Director and president of L&T Rangaswamy presented the Distinguished Alumnus Awards to seven persons, four of whom were present. The Institute Blues Awards were presented to five students for outstanding performance in co-curricular, cultural, organisational and sporting activities.
