Women's safety, rights to be taught in classrooms

MADURAI: A subject on women's safety is all set to be introduced as a separate paper by universities/colleges in the State under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

Principal Secretary to Government, Higher Education Department, K. Ganesan, has written to Vice-Chancellors in this regard citing recommendations received from the Director General of Police/ Director of Collegiate Education as a follow-up to the Madras High Court order for compliance, sources told The Hindu on Thursday.

Through this special subject, girls and women would be taught about the laws of the land under which they could seek appropriate remedies, legal rights to which they are entitled to and how to defend themselves in the event of eve-teasing, molestation, sexual harassment etc. The Vice-Chancellors of various universities can place the issue before their respective Syndicates and pass a resolution to introduce a suitable special subject as an optional in the CBCS," Mr. Ganesan has said in his letter to the Vice-Chancellors, sent recently.

It is also being made mandatory for colleges to conduct classes for girls/women at least once in a week to educate them of their rights enunciated under the law "so as to boost their self-confidence, self vigilance, physical and emotional strength to react/defend themselves whenever untoward incidents occurs."

Mr. Ganesan's communication to Vice-Chancellors stated that steps have to be taken to ask the Principals of colleges for conducting self-confidence classes for girl students at least once in a week.
