For visas and other issues ask the consul

Residents of Andhra Pradesh no longer have to go to Chennai to get their visas to visit the United States. The new U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad is now issuing visas and assisting U.S. citizens living in India.

For over a year, residents of Hyderabad have watched the former Paigah Palace on Chiran Fort Lane be transformed into the new U.S. Consulate General – the U.S. government's first new consulate anywhere since 1985, and the first new U.S. co nsulate in India since Indian Independence in 1947.

The new Consulate General provides non-immigrant visas for people who wish to travel to the U.S. for tourism, business, temporary work or study. It also provides services for U.S. citizens living in Andhra Pradesh.

The Consulate General is open Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. By the end of 2009, more than 70,000 visas are expected to be adjudicated by consular officers. The best place to find answers to your visa and general consular questions is at www.hyderabad.

usconsulate.gov.
However, The Hindu will publish an "Ask the Consul" column, every fortnight, beginning from April 20, where readers in Andhra Pradesh can pose questions to the Consulate General staff.

The questions will be forwarded to the Consulate General for response.

Please note that the consulate will not respond to questions relating to specific visa cases or refusals.

Please send your general consular questions to ' queries2consul@gmail.com'.

What you should know:
Being approved for a visa to the United States is not automatic. In most areas of U.S. law, you are innocent until you are proven guilty. Once you get your visa, it allows you to arrive at your port of entry – whether at an airport or a land border crossing – where an Immigration Officer will determine whether to let you enter the country and how long you can stay.

Strict security measures:
Visitors are not allowed to carry mobile phones, electronic personal digital assistants, cameras, audio or video recording devices, lap top computers, portable music players, travel bags, back packs, brief cases, suit cases, cosmetics (including but not limited to spray perfume/cologne and talcum/baby powder), bottles of any kind, food items, and any sealed envelopes or packages. Please do not bring any prohibited items with you as the Consulate General cannot store these items for you.

No Parking
On the day of your visa appointment, come to the Consulate General front gate on Chiran Fort Lane. Bring your appointment letter, which has the time for your interview.

Do not arrive more than 30 minutes before your appointment. For all visitors, both for visas and American Citizens Services, please note there is no parking available.

Since mobile phones are not allowed inside the compound, please make your arrangements to be picked up prior to being dropped off.
