Passport office staff demand removal of CCTVs

SECUNDERABAD: Employees of Regional Passport Office, Secunderabad, struck work on Wednesday demanding removal of closed-circuit TVs on the office
premises. Citizen services were not affected by the indefinite strike.

Over 100 employees struck work alleging RPO B Bala Bhaskar was showing CCTV footage of employees to outsiders. "The issue came to light when an employee saw the RPO showing the footage to unauthorised persons a week ago," All India Passport Employees Association, Hyderabad office vice-president G Vijaya Geetha alleged.

Voicing other concerns, an employee C Lakshmi Sharada said, "The RPO has not cleared several bills (claims) for months together. Moreover, he has been harassing employees on various charges."

An employee, Ramana Babu, died on February 12, 2008, but till date his pension was not settled, they alleged.

All India Passport Employees Association, Hyderabad office president B L Kumar said they were unhappy with the attitude of the RPO. He gave Rs 5,000 honorarium to 49 of the 149 employees for issuing 1.22 lakh passports as part of `special clearance drive,' they informed.

When contacted, deputy passport officer (DPO) A T Murthy said the allegations made by woman employees on CCTV footage being shown to outsiders "is baseless".

On honorarium, the DPO said the ministry of external affairs (MEA) had taken up `special clearance drive' for issuing passports. Forty-nine employees who participated in the drive by working on Saturdays and Sundays were paid the honorarium, he added.
