Better amenities soon for government arts colleges

VILLUPURAM: Basic amenities such as computer and laboratory facilities in 67 government arts colleges across the State are being improved, Principal Secretary of Higher Education K. Ganesan said on Monday. He was delivering the convocation address at Arignar Anna Government Arts College here.

Earlier, those graduating from government arts colleges were looked down upon. Nowadays, the infrastructure and standard of education in these colleges were on a par or even better than that of private institutions. Those who studied in government institutions had emerged achievers in many fields. Citing his own instance Mr. Ganesan said that from first standard till graduation, he studied in government schools and colleges. After completing a law course he joined government service.

He pointed out that while restrained atmosphere prevailed in private institutions absolute freedom existed in government institutions.

He called upon the students to work hard to realise their goals for which they should have self-confidence and motivation.

He noted that a majority of students joining government arts colleges were not meritorious students but average scorers — those scoring between 45 to 60 per cent.
