Killzone 2

The Playstation 3's flagship FPS is here and it's an eye-popping display of next-gen graphical fireworks.

Underneath the polygonal onslaught, it's also an entertaining, balls-to-the-wall solo campaign supplemented by a surprisingly deep multiplayer experience. Original or varied it's not. One of the best shooters on PS3.

Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360, PS3)

All the usual RE components are in place: zombie- and mutant-based scares, heart racing combat, mildly racist bit-part characters and voice acting on a par with the adult entertainment industry. With RE5, however, emphasis shifts to two-player co-op, and blasting ghouls with a close friend must rate as one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of the year.

House Of The Dead: Overkill (Wii)

Those who lurk in arcades are sure to have shot plastic guns at a chewing gum-festooned cabinet containing Sega's House of the Dead.Overkill is a stylish series revamp for Wii that delivers clever scares and satisfyingly gruesome gore. It gives a new lease of undead life to light gun games, even if the boss fights are a bit hit and miss.

Halo Wars (Xbox 360)

Real-time strategy games haven't tended to work on consoles, lacking as they do the rapid tank-clicking powers of a mouse and keyboard. Halo Wars doesn't work, but for a different reason. Clever controls and familiar units will please Halo acolytes, but ultimately the simple console design means there's just not that much actual strategy left to please the RTS hardcore. flowers in the killzone.

Flower (PS3)

All this Burning, shooting and looting getting you down? Meet the antidote to first-person shooters. The aim here is to control a flower petal as it flies across a meadow, eventually creating a whirlwind of pretty plants that cause flowers to bloom and all to be at peace. It's all very relaxing and wonderfully creative, if a little on the simple side.

Tom Clancy's Hawx (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

Before you ask, it's not a typo, the title does actually stand for something: "High Altitude Warfare... erm, X". Alright? One thing that's even cleverer than HAWX's nomenclature is its flight system. You can chose between the Enhanced Reality System, which makes pulling off Top Gun moves a cinch, thanks to virtual markers, and doing it au naturel.

Solid flight controls guide you satisfyingly through explosion-filled missions typical of the Clancy series, while the ERS does a brilliant job of easing in new players. HAWX is tough to master, and won't convert flight-sim haters, but once you've nailed it you're rewarded with just about the most polished air combat this side of that cartoon pilot from the Mr Sheen adverts.
