MADURAI: Bharathiar University at Coimbatore is tying up with the National University of Singapore (NUS) for research and exchange programmes.

Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam is leading an eight-member team to Singapore for discussing the modalities for the two institutions to sign a Memorandum of Understanding. The Bharathiar University team will visit various NUS departments from March 9 to 13.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Sunday, Dr. Thiruvasagam said the collaboration would primarily be in basic sciences, with focus on nanotechnology, biotechnology and bioinformatics, since Bharathiar University is strong in basic sciences. "A team from the NUS visited our campus last month... It saw the laboratory facilities and interacted with our faculty." An agreement might be signed on March 13 after the team had a final round of meeting with the NUS president.

As part of the MoU, the university was trying to work out an arrangement for visiting professors from the NUS "and funds have been provided."

"Our faculty has been asked to establish professional contacts with their counterparts abroad. This will help us get inputs for framing syllabi to suit the global requirements," Dr. Thiruvasagam said.

Bharathiar University had asked the colleges under its fold to suggest syllabus for various courses. "It will be good, if we involve colleges in formulating syllabus," he said.
