Open Source Portals: Free Application Infrastructure

Portal servers have been around for a long time, and are often used to integrate disparate applications behind the firewall in an enterprise environment. However, with the recent proliferation of open source portal servers from companies such as JBoss, Liferay, and eXo Platform, the barriers to using a portal have dramatically fallen.

What many people don't realize is that portal servers provide all of the features typically needed for application development (such as authentication, authorization, templating, and conversation management) as well as added bonuses such as personalization and management of application components (portlets). Some of these servers ship with portlets which implement popular features such as wikis, blogs, forums, and calendars. In addition, portal servers are embracing Web 2.0 by integrating with gadgets and providing social networking features.

This session examines the features provided by portal severs and the Java Portlet API that enable rapid development of sophisticated applications. Specific portal servers from JBoss, Liferay, and eXo Platform will be demonstrated.

Focused talking points include:

Authentication, authorization, templating, and conversation management provided by open source portal servers;
The ability to personalize and manage application components (portlets);
Popular features such as wikis, blogs, forums, and calendars that can be implemented with portlets;
How portal servers are embracing Web 2.0 by integrating with gadgets and social networking features;
And more.
