Exploring evolution of IT sector

For all those thinking that students of computer applications are nerds with little aptitude for anything else but studies, here's some info to change their opinion.It was all glitter and fun at the State-level intercollegiate cultural fiesta — Glitz '09 — organised at Yadava College here as students from across the State gave some enthralling entertainment keeping the audience on their feet.

The main theme of the event, explained an event organiser, was to trace the evolution of the Information Technology sector in the late 1990s and through the years from 2000 and the subsequent impact this growth had on the society.

With a sum of around Rs. 3 lakh, the organiser said, this event was the grandest in the history of the college.

The competitions were not all fun and frolic with many academic-oriented events were also organised. They include competitions on software programme development, debugging errors, technical quiz competition and paper presentation.Other regular contests such as rangoli, painting, dumb charades, group dance, and songs were also held.

Another event was 'As you like it,' in which the participants can display a talent of their choice. The event saw over 320 students from 31 colleges in southern districts. Several computer-related companies had put up stalls along with institutions specialising in spoken English training.

The overall trophy Glitz '09 was bagged by Madura College with Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, being the runner up.

P. Shankara Ramalingam, Principal, Pandiyan Saraswathi Yadav Engineering College, Sivaganga, S. David Amirtharajan, Dean, College Development Council, Madurai Kamaraj University, K.P. Navaneetha Krishnan, Secretary and Correspondent of the college, P. Rengan, Principal, K. Kannan, Director (self finance courses), S. Nagarajan, Head, Department of Computer Applications and SOftware, spoke during the inauguration while G. Gnanasambandhan, professor of Tamil Department, Thiagarajar COllege took part in the prize distribution function in the evening.
