VISAKHAPATNAM: Teachers have to play a key role in understanding the conditions that were responsible for climate changes, Project Officer of Sarvashiksha Abhiyan Jayaprakash Narayana said here on Wednesday.

Teachers must make their pupils understand the climate changes and their repercussions, Mr. Jayaprakash Narayana said while inaugurating a training programme for teachers on changes in temperature-environmental education organised by the Sanjeevini Rural Development Society and Centre for Environment Education.

Environmental Engineer of AP Pollution Control Board K. Sreerama Murthy said temperature was rising due to carbon gases and steps must be taken to reduce the heat. He wanted teachers and students to play a major role in explaining to people the ill-effects of climate change. Environmental education teachers could contact the APPCB for material and information, he added. Every one in the present society must have concern about environment and try to pass on a clean environment to the future generation, said Samata executive director Rebbapragada Ravi. The successive governments were keen on investments having least concern over the pollution being caused by the industries and the pressure on the resources.

A professor of Andhra University Department of Environmental Sciences, P.V.V. Prasada Rao felt that environmental education should be introduced at the primary school level.
