HCL introduces $350 laptops

Small is definitely big this year. In less than a week after Tata Motors launched its Rs.100,000 ($2,500) car, Nano, another Indian firm, HCL Infosystems, Tuesday launched a laptop for the masses for Rs.14,000 (about $350).

HCL launched two variants of the laptops, called HCL MiLeap X Series priced at Rs.13,990 and HCL MiLeap Y Series at Rs.29,990.

"Our objective was to launch a laptop that will take technology to the masses. We have not compromised on any feature at all and it is just like any other laptop," Ajai Chowdhry, chairman and CEO, HCL Infosystems Ltd, told a press conference here.

The laptops weigh less than a kilogram with a screen size of seven inches. Both the models have network ports, are Wi-Fi enabled and have the option for a data card.

The high-end MiLeap Y Series laptops are powered by Intel's Ultra Mobile Platform and Microsoft's Vista Home Premium operating system.

The Y Series weighs 960 grams and has a seven-inch swivel screen. It also comes with a hard disk drive of 80 GB with Bluetooth and Ethernet network ports, offering full functionality of a personal computer with Internet.
