SALEM: Over 2,500 students who studied M. Phil programme under the distance education mode in Periyar University in 2006-07 are in a fix as the varsity is causing inordinate delay in publishing the results.

They students wrote their examinations and submitted their dissertations a year ago and were still waiting for their results. "The university is spoiling our future by delaying the publication of results. We have not received any communication from the university about the reasons for the delay," students allege.

The distance education wing, Periyar Institute of Distance Education, admitted over 30,000 students for the M.Phil programme in 2006-07. It had conducted the examinations for all the students and received their dissertations in 2007. It had declared results for a majority of the students. But about 2,500 students, many from the Southern India, had not received their results.
No reply

Affected students claimed that they had written all the examinations and submitted the dissertations. "We have taken this issue to the notice of the study centre co-ordinators and the office of the Controller of Examinations. We did not even receive a proper reply so far," they complained.
Third paper

They said that they studied M.Phil to improve their career prospects. "We are now missing a lot of opportunities due to the delay in the publication of results," they pointed out.

University officials said that the results of about 2,500 students were not published as many of them had not finished their third paper. A few of them did not pay their fees to the university. A few others submitted their dissertations without the signature of their project guide.
Procedure

Vice-Chancellor M. Thangaraju said the university would initiate immediate steps to address the grievances of the students and results would be published by February-end. Students who had not completed the procedures fully for M.Phil programme would be informed and assistance would be provided them to complete their programme.
