SALEM: Members of the Tamil Nadu Child Labour Special School Teachers and Workers Association observed a fast here on Monday urging the Central and State governments to enhance the salary of the staff employed under the National Child Labour Project (NCLP).
Wages

The employees working in project offices and special schools for child labourers are languishing with meagre consolidated wages, ranging from Rs. 800 to Rs. 6,000 a month for several years.

The staff members, including officers, instructors, teachers, vocational teachers, field officers and administrative employees, have been struggling to make the ends meet.

The situation remains unchanged for over 20 years.

The Salem district has 40 special schools under the Project Smile (Society for Monitoring and Implementation of Child Labour Elimination).

Over 21,000 children, who were rescued from the hazardous and non-hazardous industries, have been rehabilitated through the project so far.

The members said that their dedicated service had helped bring down child labour in the State.

The association urged the governments to revise the salary of special school teachers and other staff working under the NCLP.

All the employees should be regularised as government staff, they demanded.
