Ten tips to cover-your-back

Remember these Cover-Your-Back rules that will put you in your boss' good books.

In a time when companies are churning out pink slips by the dozen, remember these Cover-Your-Back (CYB.) rules that will put you in your boss' good books.

RULE 1: Inform your boss

Keep your immediate superior in the loop about everything. While this might seem like an annoying habit at first, keeping your boss informed will turn in your favour if things go wrong. Your superior will be aware and will guide you in taking the necessary corrective action.

RULE 2: Don't get over-friendly with your boss

Your boss should not be treated like a bumchum. Office lunches and casual Friday meets are not places to reveal about your drunken escapades or one-night stands. Following the employer-employee protocol will ensure that there are no awkward moments and personal misunderstandings at work.

RULE 3: Make a weekly report

Make it a habit to file a weekly email report on the things you have achieved in the week gone by, along with a list of targets you want to achieve in the coming week. It is a good time to give updates and ask questions, if any.

Use this opportunity to highlight any important achievement or feedback that you might have received. This not only lets your boss know your targets and work repertoire, but also helps you analyse the amount of effort you have put in.

RULE 4: Keep your work space organised

A tidy workspace not only saves time and helps you get through your work faster and more efficiently, but also gives out the impression of being a responsible employee.

RULE 5: Do your job

While you may spend a lot of time in meetings and doing the right things, it is important that you do not lose focus on your actual job.

Without always saying 'yes boss', pitch in to do your extra bit in times of crisis and be proactive. Going an extra mile will make a difference.

RULE 6: Be honest

If you need a holiday, or you're unable to meet a deadline, or come in late at work, don't lie to your superior. Being caught lying even on the smallest count can permanently tarnish your reputation.

Instead, take the mature approach and explain whatever reasons and problems you have. A two-way discussion will be appreciated and will be a mark of a strong character.

RULE 7: Be on time

Putting in hours at work is one thing but following the company rules is something you cannot ignore. Being on time is a sign of being responsible and serious about your work and helps create the right impression.

RULE 8: Note everything down

Maintain written records of all official communication. In this way, if there is any problem in the team or otherwise, you will have your evidence on record.

RULE 9: Don't unnecessarily flatter your superiors

Being a suck-up may work in some situations, but can be harmful in the long run. False flattery takes a lot of energy and will distract you from your work. Also, it is the quickest way to get thumbs-down from your peer group.

RULE 10: Don't lose your temper

During a confrontation with your boss, do not lose your cool and present all valid points and arguments with a calm head. If need be, take time out after the argument to jot down your thoughts and substantiate them with documents or instances, if any.

A heated argument will only land you in an ego tussle.
