Students fulfil formalities for PAN card

TIRUCHI: Over 1,000 students besides 150 young faculties and supporting staff fulfilled formalities for obtaining their PAN (Permanent Account Number) card at the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, on Thursday.

The Institute's Department of Training and Placement organised a special camp for the purpose for the first time. According to the Department Head, A.K. Bhaktavatsalam, the initiative was necessitated by the expectation of recruiters, particularly those from IT and BPO industries, that students must compulsorily possess PAN cards at the time of placement.

There have been instances of placed students facing difficulties in drawing their salaries at the very outset after recruitment in the absence of PAN card. There was awareness among students that PAN card signifies life-long national identity, said Professor Bhaktavatsalam.

The exclusive Driving School in the Institute facilitates students to obtain their driving licences and camps are also conducted for issue of passports every year.

According to a spokesperson of G.R. and Company, the agency representing UTI Technologies to which the Income Tax department has outsourced the work of issuing PAN cards, banks insist on the document to sanction educational loans. Possession of Passport and PAN Card is imperative for securing extra points in campus interviews, he said.

There is no compulsion that PAN card holders have to pay tax or file returns. Only those with a taxable income and in need of tax refund file returns. The national identity card that the Central government is planning to distribute will be based on the PAN card number, the students were told. The agency has promised the applicants that multi-coloured tamper proof PAN cards will reach them after the processing duration of 15 working days.
