Schoolchildren steal the show

GULBARGA: Schoolchildren with their abundant talent, the parade by the different wings of the police, NCC cadets, Seva Dal volunteers and children from Bal Mandir stole the show at the 60th Republic Day celebrations at the Chandrasekhar Patil Stadium in Gulbarga on Monday.

Nearly 2,000 schoolchildren enthralled the people with performance. Earlier, the Minister and other dignitaries honoured 19 persons who had won national and State awards and honours.

They include Venkatesh Gurunayak who won the National Child Welfare Award for 2007; Hanumanth H. Devnur who won a national award for his contribution to the welfare of leprosy patients; Satish Kaskasi for winning the first prize in the South Zone and State Yoga competitions and finishing fifth in the national competitions; S.S. Patil Kadaganchi for winning the Rajyotsava award; Khaja Moinuddin, Sandeep S.P., P.K. Raju, T.R. Shivanand, all for their achievements in the under-17 hockey championship; R. Hanumanth for his achievement in the under-14 hockey championship; Saroja for her achievement in the under-14 girls kabaddi championship; Adhresh M. Kulkarni for his achievements in the under-14 cricket tournament; U. Srihari for his achievements in the under-14 cricket tournament; Sagar for his achievement in the under-17 cricket tournament; Deepak Desai for his achievement in the under-17 lawn tennis tournament; D.V. Amateep, Lakshan Hirasingh, both for their achievements in various sports events at the State and national level; Mohammed Usman for his achievement in the under-17 wrestling championship; and L.B. Kattimani for his service in the 2001 Census operation.
