Polytechnic student’s death sparks protest

MADURAI: A third year polytechnic student, who was admitted to a private hospital a week ago, following a road accident, died here on Tuesday.

Police said that M. Praveen Kumar, who was returning home from his college on the Ring Road on January 20, was reportedly hit by a speeding vehicle. He was admitted to a private hospital.

As news of his death spread, students from the polytechnic assembled in front of the hospital and shouted slogans against the doctors. Sensing trouble, a large posse of police arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd.

Aged man dies
An 82-year-old man identified as R. Gandhi Thevar of Ananda Nagar, Narayanapuram, allegedly died after a hoarding fell on him at Naganakulam, near Iyer Bungalow. Police said that a portion of the hoarding, which was being put up in the area, suddenly fell over the victim and he collapsed on its impact. The body was taken to Government Rajaji Hospital. Further investigation is on.
