VILLUPURAM: Seven thousand Gram Nyayalayas will be set up across the nation to deliver justice at the doorsteps of litigants, Minister of State for Law K.Venkatapathi said on Wednesday.

After attending a vigilance committee meeting here, he told reporters that the Centre had issued an order for setting up these bodies. Soon, 7,000 judges would be appointed to these village courts for speedy clearance of litigation. Fourteen additional judges would also be appointed to the Madras High Court.

Referring to the poor rate of literacy in Villupuram district, Mr. Venkatapathi said that thanks to the initiative taken by P. Chidambaram during his tenure as Finance Minister, banks were extending educational loans to eligible candidates. At a camp organised recently by Collector R. Palanisamy, more than 2,000 applications were received for educational loans, and they were being processed by banks.
