MYSORE: They ran to pay their tributes to a martyr. Schoolchildren of Mysore city came in large numbers to participate in a road race organised in memory of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who died fighting terrorists during the 2008 Mumbai attacks, here on Saturday.

Children from primary and high school took part in the inter-school road race competition, organised by M.S. Sadashivarao Athletic Association. The race commenced at 7 a.m. from Sports Pavilion Grounds near Yuvaraja's College, and concluded at 10.30 a.m.

Mayor Ayub Khan flagged off the 3-km-long marathon.

The race was conducted in four categories: primary school — girls and boys, and high school — girls and boys.

Children from Demonstration School, Kuvempu School, Ganapathi Ashram School, Bhagini Samaj, JSS High School and other schools took part in the competition.

The organisers presented a cash prize of Rs. 1,500 for the first prize, Rs. 1,000 for second prize and Rs. 500 for third prize in all four categories, in addition to medals and certificates. Race completion certificates were also presented to those who completed the race.
