China Uncensors Net

With strict Internet censorship laws, Olympics in China couldn't have been devoid of controversy and it began when Foreign reporters were told by Games organisers (BOCOG) that they will not have complete access to the Internet during the Beijing games, reversing an earlier pledge to bring down the Chinese firewall of censorship.

Sites linked to the banned Falungong spiritual movement and other unspecified ones would remain blocked for the thousands of foreign reporters covering the Games, BOCOG spokesman Sun Weide said.

The issue caused a major stir days before the start of the August 8-24 Olympics with IOC officials insisting there would be no censorship and BOCOG saying sensitive sites would remain blocked.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and BOCOG later reached an agreement and all Internet restrictions were lifted for the Beijing Games.
