Pulic sector lender State Bank of India would open nearly 2,000 branches across the country in the next financial year.

SBI (Bengal circle) Chief General Manager Jayant Kumar Sinha said, "the bank will open 2,000 branches across India next year."

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry here on Wednesday, Sinha said, the bank had already opened 1,000 branches across the country in the current fiscal.

At present, the bank has 11,009 branches all over the country.

On the problems faced by the SME sector due to the economic downturn, he said the bank would try to restructure accounts to prevent them from turning into NPAs.

The bank's exposure to the SME sector in the state is around Rs 8,000 crore.
