KRISHNAGIRI: National Pulse Polio Immunisation programnme will be held in Krishnagiri district on December 21 and February 1, Collector V.K. Shanmugam said here on Monday.

About 2 lakh children will be administered drops in 951 centres in 10 unions, and two municipalities in the district.

About 3,900 field staff will be entrusted the job of administering the drops to children.

The vaccine would be administered to children at all the PHCs, Sub PHCs, Government Hospitals, noon meal centers and bus stands from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

75,000 children given polio drops

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Administration's Health Department here on Sunday provided oral polio vaccine to children in the age group of 0-5 years. More than 75,000 children were given anti polio drops by end of the day.
Arrangements

463 stationary booths and 66 mobile teams were deputed for the pulse polio immunisation campaign consisting of about 2100 personnel belonging to health, education, social welfare department, various nursing Institutions, students of GMCH-32, PGIMER, NSS Volunteers from colleges and NGOs.

Special arrangements were made to provide oral polio drops at all entry points to the city, including ISBT Sector 17 and 43, railway station and airport, an official release said here.

The chilly weather and fog in the morning resulted in less beneficiaries reaching booths as compared to the last month, however it picked up as weather improved.

By the evening maximum attendance was reported from booths located in Bapu Dham, Ram Darbar, Mauli Jagran, Indira Colony, Nehru Colony, Colony No.4, Colony No.5, Dhanas, Dadumajra, Sarangpur, Khudda Jassu and Khudda Lahora.

Over the next two days all the remaining children shall be administered polio drops by house-to-house visiting teams.

CHENNAI: The second round of the pulse polio programme will be held in the State on February 1, according to a release.

The government intends to cover all those children left out during the last phase of polio vaccination in addition to the targeted 70 lakh children. The release underlines the safety of the oral polio vaccine, urging parents to bring their children for vaccination. A total of 40,399 immunisation booths will be set up in government hospitals, anganwadi centres, schools, primary health centres, bus stands, railway stations and tourist spots.

Polio vaccine absolutely safe

MADURAI: Students of various Corporation schools took out rallies in each zone of the city on Thursday to create awareness among the people that the pulse polio vaccine was safe and would not have any side effects.

The students carrying placards shouted slogans to drive home the message.

Pamphlets, with explanations that the vaccines were produced under stringent quality control norms laid down by World Health Organisation, were distributed

The vaccine administered at Government and corporation hospitals, dispensaries, noon meal centres, bus stands, railway stations were safe.

Additional oral drops would only ensure additional safety to the children. Polio might attack the children if they were not administered the vaccine, the pamphlet said.

Mayor G. Thenmozhi flagged off a rally in South zone.

Warning to rumour mongers
Those who spread unwarranted rumours on polio vaccination have been warned of criminal action by Collector P. Seetharaman.

Addressing a meeting to discuss the arrangements to be made for the second phase of polio vaccination on February 1 at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, Mr. Seetharaman said that the public could get any clarification on administration of oral polio vaccine to children up to five years of age from the Joint Director of Health (98424 60186) and the Deputy Director (94431 93882).

The Collector said that oral polio drops would be given to about three lakh children in the district at all hospitals, primary health centres, sub-centres, noon meal centres, schools and community halls. Polio drops would also be provided at bus stands, railway stations, airport, shandis, places of worship and cinema halls.

In all, 1,600 polio vaccination booths would be set up with the involvement of 7,000 persons.

The vaccine would be administered between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Pulse polio campaign

TIRUCHI:
An estimated 83,000 children below the age of five would be administered the polio oral drops during the II phase of the Pulse Polio immunisation campaign on February 1, Corporation Commissioner T. T. Balsamy said.

About 216 centres would be set up to administer the vaccines in the City and about 860 government servants and volunteers would be drafted to carry out the campaign.

Free polio surgical correction camp

MAHABUBNAGAR:
To make surgical corrections to polio victims, a free polio surgical correction camp is being organised by the district administration for 6 days with the collaboration of BIRDS hospital at Tirupati and local SVS hospital. The camp was started here on Thursday.

On the occasion, Minister for Rural Development G. Chinna Reddy said that to provide equal opportunities to the physically-challenged persons on par with others, the government is organising free polio surgical camps. He said that callipers would be distributed free of cost.

Dr. Jagadishwar of BIRDS hospital said that so far 4.5 lakh persons were treated since 1985. He said major operations will be done at BIRDS Tirupati.

Mr. Jagadishwar informed that BIRDS hospital is providing free food, accommodation and Railway concession passes etc.

Uninterrupted power to PHCs for Pulse Polio

VIZIANAGARAM: District Medical and Health Officer Ch. Mahesh has said that arrangements are in place for the 2nd phase of National Immunisation Day (NID) programme on February 1,2 and 3. During the three-days' activity 2,63,963 children in the age group of 0-5 years of age would be covered. On the last two days medical teams, self-help groups and anganwadi workers would visit house-to-house to vaccinate children left out on the first day. There are 5,22,172 houses for the house-to-house activity.

At a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Mahesh said 1,600 teams for 1,600 booths, besides 66 mobile teams, 25 transit teams, 160 supervisors and eight core group officers were being deployed to immunise the targeted children in the district.

He said that Transco would supply uninterrupted power on the three days to PHCs where the 3.40-lakh doses were being stored. He also sought cooperation of officials of other departments for the success of the programme. The DMHO claimed 100 per cent achievement in the last round of the programme. Dr. Mahesh said that efforts were being made to cover 5,987 children living in 168 hilltop villages and also 2,188 children in the 15 coastal villages.

Replying to a question, the DM & HO clarified that round-the-clock services at PHCs were only for deliveries and not for other casual ailments. He said institutional deliveries registered were 88 per cent and efforts were being made to achieve 100 per cent. On Janani Suraksha Yojana, Dr. Mahesh said that the department was facing funds crunch due to non-receipt of grants from the government and also due to more number of people living below poverty line than the state average of 40 per cent.

The department was to receive Rs.1.30 crores from 2005-06. Additional DM & HO B. Vijaya Saradhi and Deputy DM & HO Visweswara Rao were present.

Pulse polio rally

THANJAVUR: Collector M. S. Shanmugham has appealed to the people of the district to immunise their children below five years in the second phase of pulse polio programme on February 1 without fail.

He flagged off an awareness rally from Thilakar Thidal here on Friday. He said that people should not be misled by rumours that the drops are harmful.

They are absolutely safe and should be administered to children to prevent polio attack.

He said that the drops would be administered to 2,53,000 children through 1510 centres in the district during the second phase. This is 10,000 more than in the last phase.

The rally ended at the office of Joint Director of Health. Mathivanan, Deputy Director of Health, municipal engineer Ravi, C. Ganasekaran, resident medical officer, Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital, Singaravelu, president of Thanjavur Rotary Club, participated in the rally.

Pudukottai
The district administration has taken all steps for smooth conduct of the pulse polio campaign, Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar said.

The district administration had ensured that the drops were maintained at proper temperature for maintaining its potency.

Ariyalur
A total of 72,000 children in the age-group 0-5 years in the district would be covered, Collector R. Sudalaikannan said.

Speaking after inaugurating a polio awareness rally, the Collector said that 508 centres would be set up.

Pulse polio programme tomorrow

SANGAREDDY: Pulse Polio programme will be held on Feb 1 across the district. Collector Peeyush Kumar on Friday called upon the people to use of the opportunity for administering polio drops to the children aged below five years.

According to district medical and health officer Dr. Govardhan Reddy, there are 3.58 lakh children between this age group who need to be administered polio drops. 2,342 polio booths will be established in addition 86 mobile teams to cover the railway stations and bus stands. Teams will be set up at churches, temples and other public places to administer polio drops.

Polio drive passes off smoothly

PUDUKOTTAI: The second phase of the pulse polio campaign went off smoothly in Pudukottai, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts on Sunday.

Unlike the first phase of the campaign in December last year which saw a panic among the parents following the spread of some rumours, the second phase went on without any hitch all through the day.

In Pudukottai district, a total of 1.60 lakh children were covered under the campaign through 1,272 centres.

Special centres were set up the Sri Virudhapureeswarar temple in Annavasal where a large number of devotees had gathered on the occasion of 'mahakumbabhishekam' and beside scores of marriage halls where marriages were solemnised.

Special centres were set up at the Railway stations and bus stands in the district.

According to official sources, the drops were administered to about 60 children of Narikuravars at Cauvery Nagar near here.

Perambalur
A total of 49,000 children were covered under the second phase of the campaign at 341 centres in the district.

Collector Anil Meshram inaugurated the campaign at the TELC High School here.

In a release, the Collector said that a door-to-door survey would be conducted for two days till February 3, when children not covered during Sunday's campaign, would be administered the drops.

Ariyalur
In Ariyalur district, as many as 72,000 children were administered the oral drops through 508 centres. Collector R. Sudalaikannan said that awareness processions were taken out earlier to sensitise the masses to the importance of the campaign. Drops would be administered to left-out children through a door-to-door verification on February 2 and 3, he added.

86.11 p.c. coverage under Pulse Polio

Madikeri: As many as 46,941 children aged less than five of the target of 54,514 were administered polio drops in Kodagu district, amounting to a coverage of 86.11 per cent, according to information reaching here on Monday.

District Health Officer Shivaram Naik told The Hindu that the achievement in Somwapet taluk stood at 88 per cent while it was 86 per cent in Madikeri taluk. Virajpet taluk recorded 84.4 per cent.

Dr. Naik said that in some places in Madikeri and Virajpet taluks, a few members belonging to a particular community refused to get their children vaccinated in the wake of the controversy created in the previous round.

Deputy Commissioner M.K. Baladevakrishna, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat A.S. Ramachandrappa were present.

KATTAPPANA: Nearly 93,765 children in the district were given the pulse polio vaccine as part of the second phase of the national polio eradication scheme.

Belgaum: As many as 5,16,480 children were administered oral polio drops in the district on Sunday, achieving a success rate of 87.21 per cent. Of the children, 3,99,598 were from rural areas.

Polio drops to children of migrant labourers

SALEM: A total of 1,181 children including 522 children living in Sri Lankan refugee camps and 651 children of migrant labourers, all in the age group of five, were given polio drops in Salem district.

According to health officials, Tamil Nadu has been in the forefront in polio eradication through the intensive and sustained Pulse Polio campaign.

The State has not recorded any incidence of polio for the past one decade.

But the incidents of polio were reported in the States of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh from where migrant population had come to Salem for labour and livelihood.

These migrant labourers including doll makers, gypsies, construction workers, sugarcane cutters, quarry workers and others used to stay put in Salem and its neighbourhood.
Eradication

Hence to make the eradication drive a fool-proof one, the State had decided to cover the children of migrant labourers and also the children residing at refugee camps in the district. A team of doctors and para medical staff on Sunday identified 36 families in the city as 'migrant families' from other States and administered polio drops to as many as 651 children.

Later, another team visited the refugee camps in the district and gave drops to 522 children. A senior health official said that the second phase of polio immunisation would take place on December 13 beside the routine, two-phase mass immunisation programme, which falls on January 10, 2010 and February 7, 2010.
