Library week
The importance of developing library search techniques by the students was emphasised during a National Library Week celebration held at the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, in Thiruvananthapuram recently.

The occasion was marked by various programmes organised by the school library and the Readers' Club. M. Lalitha, librarian, State Council for Educational Research and Training, inaugurated the programme.

Noted Hindi poet and Kendra Sahitya Akademi award winner Dr. Rati Saxena interacted with the students in a 'Meet the Author' session. The poet explained to the students the various nuances of creative writing and publishing.

A book fair in collaboration with DC Books provided students with an opportunity to see and purchase some of their favourite books. Competitions in reading, book review and spot poetry were also held.

Vimala Menon, noted children's writer and activist, was the chief guest at the valedictory function.

The function was also attended by Cicy Roy Mathew, Principal.

Christmas fete
A Christmas fete was held at the Christ Nagar English Higher Secondary School, Kowdiar last week. Vincent Samuel, Bishop of the Neyyattinkara diocese, inaugurated the event and delivered the Christmas message.

The celebration began with a song by the school choir, followed by Nativity scenes. Fr. Sebastian Chamathara delivered the presidential address. Fr. Paul Mangad, Principal of the school, was also present. The celebrations drew to a close with the arrival of Santa Claus.

Focus on Mother Earth

St. Francis Xavier's Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin, organised a seminar on Mother Erath on Saturday. Iyyam

Perumal, Assistant Director, Gulf of Mannar Bio-sphere Reserve Trust, Tuticorin, presided and highlighted the damage caused to the nature and coral reef of Gulf of Mannar.

He insisted on creating a healthy atmosphere and protecting our Mother Earth. Rev. Fr. Ignaci, Headmaster, also underlined the importance of keeping the school campus clean and green and free from plastics. NCC cadets of Army and Navy raised slogans on protecting Mother Earth. The cadets screened a documentary film on avoiding pollution and took oath on maintaining clean environment.

The seminar was organised by troop commanders D. Selvan and R. Gilbert Fdo.

'Teen Fest – 2008'
The Indian Academy of Paediatrics organised 'Teen Fest – 2008' at N. P. S. S. R. K. Rotary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sivakasi, in which 23 schools from Virudhunagar district took part in various events. The programme was inaugurated by A.P.R.S.P.A. Ramamoorthy, who also honoured the toppers in Tenth and Plus Two examinations in the district. Navamani Prabakar presided.

V.K. Kathiravan welcomed the gathering.

Sabrin Ross, psychiatrist, delivered the Teenage Day address.

Students participated in pencil drawing, essay writing, science exhibition, folk dance, non-classical dance and fancy dress. K.C.A.D.C.G. Matriculation School, Sattur, and P. A. Chidambara Nadar Senior English School, Virudhunagar, secured the first place to share the Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal ever rolling Trophy for overall performance.

Sujatha Baskar distributed prizes to winners of competitions and Madhana Ramamoorthy presented the overall trophy.

Baskar delivered the valedictory address.

Library, laboratory declared open

A laboratory and library were declared open by the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, at S.B.K.K.S.S. Thiyagarajan Memorial Matriculation School, Aruppukottai.

V. Manoharan, president, Aruppukottai Nadar Uravinmurai Trust, presided. K.K.S.V.T. Subbaraj, chairman, Aruppukottai panchayat union, and S. Sivaprakasam, chairman, Aruppukottai Municipality, spoke.

Tiruthangal school project in science meet

A team of students of Tiruthangal Lions Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tiruthangal, led by M. Latha Prabha, has been chosen to present its project at the National Children's Science Congress, in Child Scientist B category, to be held in Nagaland.

Their project on organic farming involved identification of the impact of synthetic fertilizer and pesticide and the remedy. The project was undertaken with the help of Sri Kaliswari College, Sivakasi..

Yoga programme for world peace

Emphasising world peace, a 'yoga' programme was conducted by students of Greenfields Nursery and Primary School, Watrap, on the eve of Karthigai Deepam festival.

Kavipriya and Divya performed 'badhrasana' and Rajarajeswari performed 'padmasana,' carrying lighted lamps (deepams) on their body.

P. K. Periyamahalingam, correspondent, presided. Principal Krishnaveni welcomed the gathering.

K. Alwin spoke on 'world peace.'

Gurupakiam, president, school committee, Alagu Murugan of Vivekananda Yoga and Skating Centre, and D. Sivasubramanian of Sivasankari Academy spoke.

Fine Arts Week organised
The BMC Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin, organised a Fine Arts Week in which students participated in various competitions, including rhymes recitation, drawing, dance and essay writing.

The school's Administrative Officer, I. Joseph John Kennedy, presided.

The winners of the competitions were given prizes and certificates.

P. Balaji, a ninth Standard student, represented Tuticorin district in an international karate tournament held in Madurai in the 70-75 kg category and won the second place.

The school organised a Science Project Exhibition recently to widen the knowledge of its students and develop practical and applicative skills in them. The best projects displayed were awarded prizes class wise.

Winners
A team of students from Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Salem, emerged victorious in a number of categories at the Salem region level boxing championship held recently. The team bagged the overall championship in the event. School Headmaster Fr. S. Arulappan and St. Mary's HSS principal S. Motcharakini congratulated the winners.

Performance award
Naveen Kumar, studying in Standard VII at Vivekananda Higher Secondary School at Paundamangalam in Namakkal district bagged the best performance award in a Junior Red Cross camp. He won the prize for his ability to make friends. Sandhiya of Standard VIII of the same school won the prize for diary writing and her classmate S. Kaviya got the prize in a test about Junior Red Cross. Students of th eschool on pries in the cultural events. Correspondent R. Subramanian; and Headmaster A.V. Palanisamy; congratulated the winners.

Felicitation

Collector U. Sagayam felicitated Pirithivika, a student of R.N. Oxford Matriculation School for winning gold medal in the high jump event at the sixth All India Athletics Meet held in Uttarakhand. She was one among the 60 students from Tamil Nadu. It was the only gold medal won by Tamil Nadu in the event. College Correspondent R. Nallusamy and teachers congratulated the student.

Christmas fete
Cultural programmes marked the Christmas celebrations organised by Holy Angels Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Salem recently. Bishop of Salem Singaroyan delivered the Christmas message. Dance, dramas and singing events formed part of the celebrations.

Get silver medal

Students of O. C. P. M. Girls Higher Secondary School won a silver medal in ball badminton at the State-level Republic Day team sports meet held at Palayamkottai recently.

Assembly Speaker R. Avudaiappan and Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare T. P. M. Mohideen Khan distributed the prizes.

On HIV/AIDS
Kendriya Vidyalaya, Narimedu, organised a HIV/AIDS awareness campaign during National Adolescence Education Programme held recently. Social workers of Teddy Trust presented cultural programmes to drive home the point. Principal V. Rajagopal emphasised that students should come forward to get their doubts clarified regarding HIV and methods to prevent its infection.

Healthy food
The Sales Day organised at Rotary Laharry Matriculation Higher Secondary School propagated a healthier way of eating natural food by avoiding junk food. Natural and healthy foods were sold with a marginal profit by members of Interact Club of the school. The profit was donated to the cause of disabled children.

PTA inaugurated
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Sourashtra Coeducational Higher Secondary School was inaugurated recently. The inaugural function featured programmes in English, involving students. Lower class children sung rhymes and it was followed by a dialogue on the achievements of the school in the last academic year. The highlight of the programme was a skit on Paramartha Guru and his disciples, staged in English.

RM. Umayal, Principal, Tamil Nadu Polytechnic College, advised poor students to join the polytechnic which she said would help them get a technical diploma and a good job. Association president R.G. Ramesh Babu presided over the function. Headmaster B.R. Arangaraman welcomed the gathering. Correspondent A.K. Ramamoorthy also spoke. Prizes were distributed to students who had secured the first five ranks by G. N. R. Mahadevan, a hawker. With his meagre income, he has been giving prizes for students for many years. T. H. Lakshmanan, senior teacher, proposed a vote of thanks.

Colourful programmes
The 18th Annual Day celebrations of S. E. V. Matriculation Higher Secondary School featured colourful programmes presented by students of various classes. An English play on Akbar and Birbal, folk dance, skating, gymnastics and silmabam display added variety to the celebration.

Dinesh Ponraj Oliver, Deputy Commissioner, Madurai Corporation, distributed prizes to students for general proficiency. Correspondent S.E.V. Kaja Kamal, secretary K. Shahul Hameed and Principal K. Mathivadanan spoke.

Knowing about fruits and vegetables
Fruits and Vegetables Day was celebrated at Karpaga Vinayagar Matriculation Higher Secondary School, K. Pudur, in which Kindergarten students presented models of fruits and vegetables. Principal M. Saroja said that such programmes were conducted to make students identity the varieties of fruits and vegetables that were energy providers. Administrative Officer S. The ninth annual sports meet of Ananda Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Rajapalayam, featured demonstration of karate, yoga and physical exercises by students.

The Annual Day celebration of BMC Group of Schools, Tuticorin, witnessed the display of students' talent in dance, music and oratory.

The highlight of the celebration was a folk dance on Pongal festival that brought out the spirit of the harvest festival.

Third place in yoga contest
Students of Greenfields Nursery and Primary School, Watrap, won the third place in the district-level yoga competitions conducted at Rajapalayam.

More than 600 students of various schools across Virudhunagar district took part in the competitions.

The prizes were distributed by K.S. Murugesan, Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Pongal celebrated by students, teachers
Pongal was celebrated at Kamak Nursery and Primary School, Tuticorin, with music performance by students and rangoli creations by teachers. Vanaja Raja Gopalan, correspondent, presided. Arun Vellaiappan and Vasani Chandrika of Golden Gates Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Salem bagged the best outgoing student award.

CII, Tamil Nadu, chairman Manickam Ramaswami presented the award and certificate to the students at a function held in the school recently.

The Lady of Golden Gates award went to Sri Soundarya. Dakshinamurthi and Vishal won the Gentleman of Golden Gates Award. Nikil Gandhi, Achuthkumar, Suraj Murthi and Nikitha Mohan won the Golden Student award. Ramesh K. Govindarajan and Nishanth Malbani bagged the Rathina Prabha award.

Republic Day
Rasipuram Sri Vidya Mandir School and Kodai FM jointly organised special programmes to mark Republic Day.

School founder-president R.M. Krishnan inaugurated the programmes. Students from 25 schools participated in the programme. Kodai FM Director Maha Somaskandamoorthy was the chief guest. The programmes, which were broadcast live, included a quiz and singing competition.

The SKV Matriculation School in M.Kandampalayam in Tiruchengode celebrated Republic Day.

School chairman S. Ramamoorthy presided. Maniyanur Panchayat President M. Ponnusamy hoisted the National Flag.

Girl child
The Vivekananda Higher Secondary School and Vivekananda Matriculation School in Paundamangalam in Namakkal district observed the National Girl Child Day recently.

Speakers in the programme stressed the importance of women empowerment and girl child education.

Fight terrorism, students told
A call to students to fight deforestation, adulteration and terrorism was given by N. Seyad Nawaz, who hoisted the national flag at the Republic Day celebration at Seyad Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Courtallam. T.A. Charles Neel, Principal, welcomed the gathering. S. Kumarakuruparan, Tamil teacher, presented 'felicitation verses.' The celebrations were organised by the English Department.

Republic Day celebrated
The Principal, Senthil Kani, hoisted the national flag at the Republic Day celebration organised at Kamak Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tuticorin. Patriotic songs were sung by students of ninth standard. Kowsalya, a student, delivered a speech on the 'Republic Day.'

Shiny Kamala Chandrika performed Bharatanatyam. Students also presented a dance on the theme, unity in diversity.

Volunteers clean railway station

The National Service Scheme students of Government Higher Secondary School, Kuruvikulam, Tirunelveli district, cleaned the Kovilpatti railway station as part of their social service activities. They were led by R. Subbaraju, NSS Programme Officer. They cleaned the platform and railway lines by removing waste paper and plastic.

Students honoured
The national tricolour was hoisted by P. Saraswathi, panchayat president, at the Republic Day celebration organised at Government Higher Secondary School, Sankarapandiapuram, Virudhunagar district. Prizes were distributed to students for academic proficiency and punctuality for students and good performance for teachers.

Annual Day
Counian Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, Kovilpatti, celebrated its 17th Annual Day recently. Toppers of SSLC and Plus Two examination in the academic year 2007–08 were honoured with awards, medals, shields and felicitated by K.V.K. Perumal, Additional Private Secretary to Union Home Minister. G. Balu, Principal, welcomed the gathering. The Sports Day of the school, was also held recently. Students presented cultural programmes and exhibited their skills on mass drill and Silambam. D. Kannan, DSP, presided over the function. T. Ganesan, Regional Inspector of Physical Education, Tuticorin and Priya Kannan, industrialist, congratulated the students' for displaying talent in various fields.

BANGALORE: Jnana Deepthi English Primary and High School, Avalahalli, celebrated its annual day recently. Vijayanagar MLA M. Krishnappa inaugurated the celebrations. He emphasised the need for providing quality education to children and said that each child was special. He told parents to encourage their children to participate in co-curricular activities which would help them excel in academics too. He remarked that children of today were confident and they have the will to conquer the world. "What they need is encouragement and support," he said.

Former Deputy Mayor M. Lakshminarayana was the chief guest. The two distributed prizes to meritorious students.

Navyashree, who had secured 97 per cent in the SSLC examination, was felicitated for her achievement. R.M. Nivedita received the best student prize.

About 20 students received prizes for 100 per cent attendance. Later, students presented a variety entertainment programme.

Secretary of the institution Pramila Bai, principal Narayan Murthy and headmistress Ranjani Ramanath were present.

Celebrations
The students of Delhi Public School Bangalore North celebrated Republic Day with patriotism and pride. S.C. Joshi, Director, Institute of Wood Science and Technology, unfurled the national flag and received the salute from the marching contingents.

He emphasised the need to go back to ancient Indian culture, which believes that life is interlinked and related and it is this symbiotic relationship that will sustain all life. He urged the students to return to the values of nature preservation and also understand their role in the whole eco-system.

Principal Sneh Preet Sial greeted the audience with a sense of shared nationalism and said, "I want to use this occasion to encourage students to do their bit in the incredible task of nation building through seemingly small steps such as planting a tree. It is time we translated our words into actions," she said.

Later, Mr. Joshi gave away prizes to students, who had excelled in the field of sports. Geetha Kandaraji, primary in-charge, told the students to spread the message of love, peace and truth and to celebrate the country's unity in diversity.

Winners
Shabarish Dinesh Rao and Ravindra, both students of Sri Jnanakshi Vidyaniketan, have brought laurels to the institution by winning prizes at the national-level abacus competition held in Chennai recently.

They both have won first runner-up prizes in the second level of the competition. Over 4,000 children from schools across the country participated in the competition. Eight-year-old Shabarish, who has interest in science and sports, said that he was well-prepared for the competition.

Students of SRV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who excelled in various competitions including, drawing, music, drama, dance, and sports were felicitated at a function organised there recently. Inspector of Matriculation Schools R. Guruchandran was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. He also presented awards to best class teachers and mentors.

Volunteers honoured
Outstanding Junior Red Cross (JRC) volunteers of Tiruchi Educational district were honoured at a function organised at Teppakulam Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School. District Educational Officer S. Rajendran was the chief guest and presented 'Best Junior' award to the student cadets of various schools in Tiruchi. Mr. Rajendran also released a souvenir which was received by Tamil Nadu Throwball Association vice-president Kannaiyan Raja. Bishop Heber HSS Headmaster Stanley, JRC Convener, Tiruchi Educational District, Jeevanandam and Joint Convener M. Jawahar Hasan spoke.

14th Annual Day
The 14th annual day of Shri Jayendra Vidhyalaya Nursery and Primary School, Musiri, was celebrated with gaiety. Revenue Divisional Officer S. Thilak, Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Sethuraman and Lecturer, Mariamman Educational Institution, N. Srinivasan were the chief guests. Cultural programmes by the students enthralled the audience. Fifth Annual Day
The fifth annual day of Ecole De Bambino was celebrated with pomp. Campion Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School Principal Bro. J. Jesuraj was the chief guest and Sri Sivananda Balalaya Correspondent K.G. Meenakshi was the guest of honour. Cultural programmes by the students enthralled the audience. Consumer day celebrated
The Consumer Club of the L. N. P. Girls Higher Secondary School, Lalgudi, celebrated the World Consumer Day by organising a special meeting. P. Preethi, a student member, spoke on the topic 'safe food and adulteration'. The student members staged a drama explaining the dangers posed by adulterators to the society. Sakuntala Srinivasan, president, Tiruchi Payaneettalar Iyakkam, presided over the programme and explained the various activities initiated by the club during the current academic year. The students actively interacted with Mrs. Sakunthala Srinivasan at the end and got their various doubts on counsumerism and consumer movement cleared. School headmistress S. Sasikala and others offered felicitations.

Graduation ceremony

The Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Nagapattinam organised 'Graduation Ceremony' (Vidyopasana Dinam) last week. The children who have successfully completed pre-schooling dressed in convocation robes were presented 'graduation certificates.' Ms. Geetha Parthasarathy, a senior member of Chinmaya Mission and Principal of Srirangam Chinmaya Vidyalaya was the chief guest and delivered the convocation day address. Nalini Kaladharan, Principal, explained the growth of the institution since its inception.

Anniversary celebrated
RVS Bharath Girls School at Ayakaranpulam near Vedaranyam celebrated its anniversary last week. Swaminthan, Correspondent of the school who presided over the function, explained the growth of the institution in providing quality education to rural students. A. Vedaratnam, managing trustee of Kasthurba Gandhi Kanya Gurukulam, Vedaranyam, the chief guest and distributed prizes to the students. Latha, Headmistress spoke.

Orientation on vermicomposting
The Department of Microbiology, PRIST University, Thanjavur, organised a series of extension programmes to create awareness on vermicomposting technology among students at various schools in Thanjavur town recently.

C. Lakshminarasimhan, Research Advisor, has designed a cost-effective, easy, portable bucket method for demonstration purpose. G. Swamidoss Daniel, Dean of Sciences and HOD of Microbiology, gave lectures on vermitechnology on using various types of ea rthworms for composting of domestic and household organic wastes for converting them to organic manure for gardening.

P. Prabakaran of Microbiology Department, demonstrated the steps in layering of organic wastes, cowdung, leaf litter and mud in the bucket with suitable cultured earthworms. The school students had the chance of handling live earthworms and practicing the methods for their own use in households. The awareness programmes were held in St. Peter's HSS, Girls Christian HSS, Blake HSS, Maxwell Matriculation HSS, Seventh Day Matriculation HSS, Panayakottai Government High School, Harithuvaramangalam HSS, Vaduvur HSS, Needamangalam HSS, and Ponnaiyah Ramajayam Public School.

Headmasters and teachers of these schools also attended the programmes. Free distribution of vermicompost packets to students was also done.

Convocation held
The fifth convocation of the Seetha Lakshmi Vidhyashram, Pudukottai, was held recently.

Rama Subburam, MLA, presided over the function and gave away the certificates to students. He also honoured the outstanding students. The school chairman, S. V. S. Vijayakumar delivered a special address. The Headmistress of the school, V. Hyacinth pr esented a report. The Correspondent of the school, S. A. Anbumuthu offered felicitations.

"Excel in studies"
The Hostel Day and Women's Day of Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, was celebrated recently. More than 100 hostel inmates participated in the colourful variety entertainment programmes.

The chief guest, Jayson. J, Director of Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, distributed prizes to academic toppers and winners of the events. Senior Principal, Jonathan. J, presided over the function.

He urged the young students to take full advantage of the facilities available in the hostel and excel in studies and other activities.

Students win gold medals
The students of Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, won five gold medals, one silver and two bronze at the fourth state-level karate tournament conducted by Dakshina Martial Arts and Karikalan Karate and Silambam Association in Pudukottai recently.

B. Karikalacholan, a class XI student, bagged two golds in kata and team kata events and a bronze in kumite. S.P. Akila, also a class XI student, bagged two golds in team kata and kumite events and a silve in kata.

M. Priyadarshini, a class VI student, won gold in kumite event and U. Rajarajeswari, a class I student, won bronze in kumite. Senior Principal, J. Jonathan, and karate master, M. Balasubramanian, commended the students. The medal winners will be participating in the national-level competitions.

Special Olympic competition
The Malarchi Special School for Mentally Challenged Children, Kalamavur in Pudukottai district and the Rotary Club of Pudukottai, jointly organised a special Olympic competition for the mentally challenged children of Pudukottai district in the district stadium recently.

More than 170 children participated in events like long jump, high jump, throwball and other track events.

District Revenue Officer, Mahendravel, inaugurated the meet, while Malarchi Special School student, Sumathi lit the Olympic torch. The Special Olympic-Bharath Assistant Director, Paul Devashayam, District Rehabilitation Officer, Georgedoss, District Sports Officer, Kannusamy, District Sports Olympic Coordinator, P. Mahalingam, and others offered felicitations and commended the performance of the young boys and girls.

Annual Day celebrated
The 39th Annual Day of Nizam Oriental Arabic School, Pudukottai, was celebrated with usual pomp and gaiety on the school premises recently. The school president, A. R. Noor Ahamed presided over the function.

Pudukottai councillors, M. S. Mohamed Ibrahim Sait and Chandrasekaran and Village Education Committee member, Soundararajan, were the chief guests and gave away the prizes. Headmaster M. S. Haja Mohideen presented the annual report.

The president of the Rotary Club of Pudukottai, P. Karuppiah, distributed free uniforms and sweets to the students of Government School for the Visually Challenged at a special function organised by the Rotary Club and the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Welfare Association in Pudukottai recently. Student tops CBSE public examinations

S. Shanmathi of ONGC Public School, Karaikal, brought laurels to her school by scoring 484 marks in the CBSE standard X examinations to top the list in the Puducherry Union Territory, according to a press release of the Principal of the School, B. Sivakumar. Prasun Bhaskar secured centum in Social Science and Mathematics. Abinaya secured centum in Social Science. Of the 81 students who appeared for the examinations, 39 students had secured 400 marks and above. Many student s had got A1 grade in most of the subjects, Mr. Sivakumar added.
Rank holder felicitated

K. Shilpa of Vairams Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, secured 486 out of the maximum 500 marks in the Class X Matriculation Board Public Examinations, to bag the state fourth rank and district first rank. She was also the state topper in English subject. The Inspector of Matriculation Schools and the Mundaiyan, the Principal of the school, T. Akila, the vice-principal, S. Subramanian felicitated Shilpa on her achievement.
Cent per cent pass

The Aditya Birla Public School, Reddipalayam near Ariyalur achieved an impressive cent per cent pass in the CBSE class X examinations. All the students came out successful in first class with 17 distinctions. M. Durairaj secured 466 marks out of the maximum 500 to be the school topper. He got cent per cent in Mathematics and 99 per cent in Tamil. Rajula Mourya Teja Reddy got 460 marks to finish second and R. Vijaya Chander got 452 marks to finish school third. S. Natarajan , Joint Executive President, Grasim Industries Limited, V. B. Ekre, J. Sethu, Kamini Natarajan, president of the Sangam Ladies Club, Principal, Geetha Govindan Menon and teachers felicitated the toppers.
Gold and cash awarded to toppers

N. Vimal of Nizam Oriental Arabic High School, Pudukottai, brought laurels to the institution by securing 446 marks out of the maximum 500 and emerged as district topper in the OSLC public examinations. S. Taslima, who secured 437 marks and Akbar Ali, with 404 marks finished school second and third rank respectively. The Chairman of the school, A. R. Noor Mohamed, Headmaster, M. S. Haja Mohideen and others commended the achievement of the students. The top rankers were pre sented with cash award of Rs. 1,000, Rs. 500 and Rs. 300 respectively. The Headmaster gave a special prize of one gram of gold to Taslima in appreciation of her securing 91 per cent in the English paper.
Students commended

M. Sufia Anjum, a student of Al'Ameen Matriculation Higher Secondary School secured school first rank in the class X Matriculation exams tallying 476 marks out of 500.

She also secured centum in Mathematics. R. Vigneswaran (430 marks) and E. Selvapragatheesh (427) came second and third. Johnsyrani (416 marks), N. Mohamed Kiyasudeen (411), Samsul Fowjia (409) were the other students to score over 400 marks. The Corre spondent of the School, M. Kalamaludeen, the Principal, S. Syed Abdul Subhahan and other teachers commended the achievements of the students.

Environment Day celebrated

The National Green Corps (NGC) unit of the Government High School, Uppliakkudi, Pudukottai district, celebrated the World Environment Day by taking out an environment awareness rally in the village.

The headmaster of the school, G. Sathyamohan, flagged off the rally, which was led by A. Selvendran, staff in-charge of the NGC unit.

The NGC volunteers and the teachers who participated in the rally carried placards and banners with the slogans underlining the importance of increasing the forest cover for protecting the environment.

The rally culminated into a meeting, when it was decided to plant saplings on the school campus and surrounding areas throughout the year.

The NGC volunteers also took a oath.
Rally on elementary education

Students and teachers of the panchayat union middle school at Kaveripoompattinam in Nagapattinam district took out a rally through the main streets in the town last week stressing the importance of providing elementary education to all the children.

Students appealed to the villagers to send their children to schools and provide compulsory elementary education and also to eradicate child labour.

The rally was organised under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme (Anaivarukkum Kalvi Iyakkam) to prove useful and relevant elementary education for all children in the age group of 6 to 14.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is an effort to universalise elementary education by community ownership of the school system.
Students take pledge on environment

World Environment Day was observed at CSI Higher Secondary School, Ariyalur. Headmaster A. Selvaraj spoke on the topic 'role of students in environmental protection.' The students took a pledge to protect environment. Saplings were planted in the campus.

Painting, essay writing and quiz competitions were held.

Fire fighting methods demonstrated

A demonstration by the fire fighters was held at Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai.

Zonal Fire and Rescue Officer P. Nandagopal and Assistant Officer G. Rajasekar spoke.

The fire service personnel enacted various rescue operations. Senior Principal Jonathan Preeth and Principal S. Ravikumar were present.

Learning responsibility early SCHOOL NOTES


BANGALORE: Baldwin Girls' High School, Richmond Road, held its primary section and opportunity school annual prize day recently. B.E. Umapathy, Additional Director-General of Police was the chief guest, while Leena Umapathy distributed prizes to meritorious students.

The students of the primary section presented a dance-drama "Up, up with people", while the students of opportunity school enthralled the audience with the Hindi number "Jai ho".

Principal Indira Williams welcomed the gathering and introduced the guests.

Investiture
Amid joy and excitement, the National Public School, Koramangala, held its investiture ceremony recently. The new office-bearers were handed over their respective flags and badges, along with the responsibilities to carry on in the new academic year. The leaders took oath promising to execute their duties and hoped for a rich and fruitful year ahead for their fellow students. Sourabh Agarwal was elected the school prefect. Principal Bindu Hari reminded the office-bearers of their commitment towards work and to strive and achieve success in whatever they do. The event culminated with a cultural show put up by the students. The day marked the beginning of yet another eventful year for the school.

In-service course
Kendriya Vidyalaya, RWF, Yelahanka, hosted an in-service course for social science teachers recently. In all, 43 teachers from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu participated in the 12-day course. Nirmala Mohanan, Education Officer, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan (KVS), Bangalore Region, inaugurated the programme. In her keynote address, she emphasised the need to motivate the child to take up humanities and the relevance of social science . S. Rajagopalan, retired education officer of KVS, told the teachers about the aim of teaching social science.

World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day was celebrated at Siddhu Matriculation Higher Secondary School on June 8. C. Divya of standard XI delivered a speech on how people spoiled the oceans and the ways to save them. P. Arul Mozhi Devan of standard IX provided information on peculiar organisms and usefulness of oceans. Students went around the school campus holding placards that carried messages on the need to protect oceans.
Saplings planted

A cleaning campaign and planting of tree saplings marked the World Environment Day celebration at Rotary Laharry Matriculation Higher Secondary School on June 5. Students planted saplings to contribute to the sustainable development of the environment.
'Love plants'

A skit on 'love plants' featured the World Environment Day celebrated at Maruthu Rukmani Matriculation School on June 5.

The highlight of the programme was distribution of different varieties of seeds to students, to create awareness of preservation of environment. They also took a pledge to conserve the environment.
Inaugurated

Various associations of St. Claret's Higher Secondary School, Karumathur, were inaugurated by R. Chockalingam, president, Kaviarasu Kannadasan Narpani Mandram, on June 12. In his address, Mr. Chockalingam exhorted the students to develop reading habit to scale new heights in life.

Annual athletic meet

A colourful cultural programme marked the 121st annual athletic meet of the Saint Joseph's Boys Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School held at Coonoor recently.

With hundreds of athletes vying for honours, the Azad house with 208 points emerged victorious.

It was followed by Tagore house (175),Gandhi house (130) and Prasad House (112).

The Deputy Commandant, Madras Regimental Centre, Colonel S.S.Judge participated as the Chief Guest.

Basketball tournament

A district-level basketball tournament was conducted by V.S.K. Duraiswamy Nadar English Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, Sivakasi, in which four schools participated. Kshatriya Girls Higher Secondary School lifted the Sri A.S.C. Bose Trophy and P.S. Chidambaram Nadar Senior English School, Virudhunagar, won the Smt. Kanchana Bose Trophy. The tournament was inaugurated by J. Baskar. A. Santhan distributed the prizes.
Self-confidence camp

A camp on self-confidence was organised for students of Greenfields Nursery and Primary School, Watrap. Writer Aruppukottai Rajapandi, who was the resource person, spoke on how students could attain self-confidence so as to score high marks. Gurupackiam, correspondent, presided over the camp. The Principal Selvarani welcomed the gathering. Kathiresan, president, Kandar Sashti Festival Committee, also addressed the students.

Raksha Bandhan

To inculcate a sense of true love and affection in the minds of young children, Akshaya Academy, Palani, organised Raksha Bandhan. The chairman, Purushothaman, presided over the function.

Sangeetha of Standard VII spoke. The Senior Principal, Chandrasekaran, spoke. The girls chanted the mantras and tied rakhis on the wrists of their brothers.

A function to honour students who had scored above 450 marks in the public examinations was held at Christhuraja Matriculation School, Tiruppattur. The Parent-Teacher Association president Prem Kumar presided over the function. Sivaganga Oxford Matriculation School correspondent Shyamala and the school Academic Development Council president Parvathi presented the medals and prizes to the top rankers. Thanga Eswari of N.M. Government Girls Higher Secondary School, who had s cored centum in mathematics, science and social science subjects, was the star attraction. The top ranking students of Christhuraja School Manish Kumar, Mani Raj and Gopinath were also honoured.
