TIRUCHI: The bio-control laboratory, funded under the National Horticultural Mission of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, was inaugurated at the TNAU – Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, here on Saturday.

The state-of-the-art laboratory, with modern instruments and advanced technological equipment, has been commissioned at an outlay of Rs.70.55 lakh.

It will not only provide an opportunity for the students of the college to understand the nuances of manufacturing bio-control agents but also help farmers get the same. It will facilitate analysis on agricultural entomology and plant pathology.

The equipment, among other things, include, high-resolution ultra centrifuge; rearing cages; pipetting system; semi automatic fermentor and vertical autoclave.

Interacting with students after inaugurating the laboratory, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, C. Ramasamy, spoke on the relevance of bio-control agents in enhancing productivity. He appealed to them to train farmers in the manufacture of bio-control agents, so as to generate employment opportunities in rural areas.

He also said that bio-control laboratory formed an essential component of the Agri-clinic and budding entrepreneurs inclined to set up such clinics should take maximum advantage of this laboratory.

College Dean S. Jeyaraman said that the laboratory would produce and market bio-control agents to benefit the farmers. It would also impart training to the in-service agricultural and horticultural personnel, members of self-help groups, undergraduate students and rural youths on commercial production of these agents. To start with, the annual production would benefit about 250 acres of various crops including horticultural varieties in the district and the production would be stepped up in future to benefit the farmers in the central districts.

Later, Dr. Ramasamy declared open the examination hall constructed at an expenditure of Rs.12.50 lakh.
