Madras University to set up centre for cyber crime

The Department of Criminology of the University of Madras will set up a centre of excellence for cyber crime, with Rs.1 crore granted by the State government.

At a training programme organised here recenty for schoolteachers on the prevention of drug abuse among schoolchildren, Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran said: "The university will conduct special programmes for a select group of schoolteachers to create awareness of the dangers of the increase in drug abuse in schools."

Mr. Ramachandran said the university had been taking initiatives to address social issues.

"We will stress the need for a special programme for tackling drug abuse among schoolchildren and seek policy assistance and funds from the government."

Studies showed that drug abuse was increasing among schoolchildren.

"Teachers and parents have to play a greater role in solving the problem of drug abuse," said R. Thilagaraj, head of the Department of Criminology, University of Madras.

"We are planning to have a yearlong training programme on drug abuse for school," said M. Srinivasan, Senior Lecturer, Department of Criminology.
