CHENNIMALAI: Vice Chancellor of Anna University, Coimbatore, R. Radhakrishnan has said that henceforth engineering colleges will assist schools to carry out research.

Addressing school students and teachers at the Tamil Nadu Science Forum's Erode District Congress of the Sixteenth National Children's Science Congress at the M.P. Nachimuthu M. Jaganathan Engineering College here on Monday, he said the University would instruct the 103 engineering colleges under its control to assist schools in their neighbourhood.

"Science and technology should not remain within the confines of engineering college campus, it should help all concerned and one way of doing it was to assist schools in the neighbourhood."

Dr. Radhakrishnan also said that the engineering colleges would soon join schools in the region in an effort to address the issue of managing solid, liquid and gaseous wastes.

"The University is likely to take up through research the issue of addressing wastes and in that effort, schools would also play a role."He also promised to take care of schools' technical and financial needs in carrying out the research. To the school students the Vice Chancellor said research was not something to be carried out in laboratory alone but in the open, in nature as well.

"Look around and observe nature, it has wonders within," he said and added that research was a continuous process and not a one-time attempt.

Chief Education Officer, Erode, Pon. Kumar said teachers should not discourage students from asking questions, which was a result of thinking. "Do not feel challenged when students throw questions. Instead, encourage them to ask questions, for which you better be prepared."

He further said it was parents who required counselling on watching television, as they were the ones who were more addicted to it than students.

Mr. Kumar suggested that the teachers rather than training students to learn by rote and write verbatim the answers, should encourage them to think and write creatively.
