Income tax department to go customer friendly

The income tax department is all set to become more people friendly and heralding the change will be a new tax payer service (TPS) to be introduced later this month, a top official said here Saturday.

Speaking at a post budget analysis organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Chief Income Tax commissioner of Pune M. Narasimhappa said: "Out of all the people who pay tax we don't even get to see 98 percent. We have any kind of interaction only with the two percent who come under any kind of scrutiny.

"We are a government department which provides services to people but over the years we have started acting like a regulator," he said on the sidelines of the event.

TPS will have number of products and is being designed keeping a taxpayer's needs in mind.

According to Narsimhappa, on all Wednesdays between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. the income tax offices in Pune will have open walk-in-interviews with officials, where the taxpayers can put forward their questions.

The department had set a tax collection target of Rs.120.6 billion ($3 billion) for the current fiscal year of which 74 percent had already been collected, he added.
