India sent 94,563 students to US in 2007-08

Washington: 'Open Doors report' published annually by IIE said that India retained its position of being the major source of students going to the US for study by sending the maximum number of Indians to the US universities in 2007-08.

India sent a record number of 94,563 students to the US universities and colleges in 2007-08, says the report. The number of Indian students marks an increase of 13 per cent over the previous, according to the 'Open Doors report' published annually by the Institute of International Education(IIE) with support from the US State Department. Released on Monday, Nov 17the report says India is among the top three countries that post double-digit increases followed by China with (81,127, up 20 per cent) and South Korea (69,124, up 11 per cent).

The top ten most popular fields of study for international students in the US in 2007-08 were Business and Management (20 per cent of total), Engineering (17 per cent), Physical and Life Sciences (9 per cent), Social Sciences (9 per cent), Mathematics and Computer Science (8 per cent), Fine and Applied Arts (6 per cent), Health Professions (5 per cent), Intensive English Language (5 per cent), Education (3 per cent), Humanities (3 per cent), and Agriculture (2 per cent).

For the seventh year in a row, the University of Southern California is the leading host institution with 7,189 international students, says the report.

The New York University hosts the second highest number of foreign students (6,404). Other campuses in the top 10 are: Columbia University (6,297), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (5,933), Purdue University (5,772), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (5,748), University of California, Los Angeles (5,557), University of Texas, Austin (5,550), Harvard University (4,948), Boston University (4,789), and University of Pennsylvania (4,610).

Over all, the number of international students at colleges and universities in the US increased by 7 per cent to a record high of 623,805 in the 2007-08 academic year, says the report.

This 2007-08 growth builds on a 3 per cent increase reported for 2006-07, and the total number now exceeds by 6 per cent, the previous all-time high of 586,323 reported in 2002-03.The report shows an even stronger increase in the number of new international students, those enrolled for the first time at a US college or university in fall 2007. New international student enrollments rose by 10 per cent, following an increases of 10 per cent and 8 per cent for the previous two years.

Manipal: Wesley Robertson, Consul for Press and Information Affairs, American Consulate General, Chennai, said on Thursday that 94,563 Indian students are studying in the U.S., which represents an increase of 12.8 per cent over the last year's figure.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the satellite information centre of the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) at Manipal University.

Mr. Robertson said that the number of students coming from India to the U.S. to study was more than those from any other country in the world. This year, the number of American students studying in India had increased by over 24 per cent. India was now among the top twenty destinations of U.S. students studying abroad. "Hundreds of Indians have benefited from studying in the U.S. The U.S. has also benefited from bright and talented students and researchers from India joining our colleges and universities," he said.

He said: "In 2007-08, as many as 6,23,805 students from all over the world came to the U.S. to study. With more than 3,700 accredited institutes and several universities to add to a wide variety of courses to chose from, the U.S. has been most sought after for students to pursue education there. We have a programme for almost every conceivable field of interest." The U.S. had the best overall system for higher education in the world. "While there are many good colleges and universities in various countries, the diverse range of academic programmes, combined with reputation for academic excellence in the U.S. is unmatched," he said.

The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) was established through a bilateral agreement between the two countries in 1950. Since then, the foundation had awarded about 7,900 Fulbright fellowships and administered about 8,600 fellowships, he said.
