College students get scholarships

Chennai: At a time when there are growing complaints against the management of self-financing engineering colleges regarding monetary exploitation of students, a city college on Tuesday distributed a significant sum — Rs 1.39 crore — as scholarships to its meritorious students.

The management of the St Joseph's College of Engineering has been disbursing merit scholarships for the fourth consecutive year. Another reputable institution, the SSN College of Engineering, is also known to handsomely reward meritorious students every year. A few other private institutions in Tamil Nadu have started the practice of awarding scholarships in recent times.

"Scholarship amounts varying from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 were distributed to students based on their performance in examinations. The scholarship is awarded to one out of every seven students, at an average of Rs 25,000.

The total amount is calculated at a 1:7 ratio in a class," a press release issued by the St Joseph's College of Engineering said. College chairman Jeppiaar gave away the scholarships to 442 students at a function on the campus on Tuesday. College director B Babu Manoharan and principal Jolly Abraham were present.
