The next time you appear for a job interview, make sure that you wear the right knot, for a study has revealed that the colour of your tie is the key to getting the new assignment.

Researchers in Britain have carried out the study and found that tie colours and designs are associated with certain types of people - for example, a purple, green or even a pink tie could cost you that new assignment.

According to them, purple ties scream arrogance and gaudiness and could rule someone out of a job before they've even sat down at the interview. Green ties too give a bad impression as they suggest the wearer is greedy, jealous, unlucky and a bit of a ch ancer. And, pink ones should be left at the back of the wardrobe as they are favoured by soppy romantics looking for admiration. Moreover, anyone who thinks a printed novelty tie will brighten up other people's days is sadly mistaken - it shows the wear er is desperately trying to appear more significant, sexy or outgoing than they are, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

So, what's the safe bet? Yellow, red and maroon ties, which give the impression of being solid, being powerful and being calm, respectively, according to the researchers.

In fact, they came to the conclusion after carrying out a survey of 2,000 men who're asked about what colour ties they wore, how they made them feel and what they thought of other people's ties. They're asked about their luckiest ties.

Lead researcher Ludwig Lowenstein of Southern England Psychological Services in Hampshire said choosing the correct neckwear was particularly important at the moment as men fight for jobs in the economic downturn.
