FLEXIBLE AC TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS CONTROLLERS & THEIR APPLICATIONS IN EMERGING POWER SYSTEMS

Limitations of a power transmission network arising from environmental, right-of-way and cost problems are fundamental to both bundled and unbundled power systems. Hence, there is an interest in better utilization of available power system capacities by installing new devices such as flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS).

FACTS controllers provide new control facilities, both in steady state power flow control and dynamic stability control. The possibility of controlling power flow in an electric power system without generation rescheduling or topological changes can improve the performance considerably. India has already taken the step in installing these devices in the system and many more are planned in the future.

The main objective of the course is to enhance the knowledge of the participants in FACTS devices, their modeling and controller issues, application in modern power system operation and control and grid management.

This course will also provide a platform to an in-depth discussion on the various issues in installation and operation of FACTS controllers along with the experiences of existing one which will benefit participants from academic and R & D institutions, professional engineers of utilities, and policy makers.
